Erie Institute of Technology (EIT) located at the Millcreek Mall complex is a technical training school offering diploma and associate degree programs in over a dozen career fields. EIT's 40,000 square foot building includes an impressive 12,000 square foot manufacturing lab featuring 12 Manual Machines, 7 CNC Machines, and 15 Welding Booths. EIT also offers Continuing Education Classes and Industry Specific Training to area employers, allowing them to customize training for their employees and keep them up-to-date in their industry. Through this program EIT has trained over 3,000 students for employers since 2006. Choosing a career can feel overwhelming when you're trying to identify the one perfect job you're supposed to have for the rest of your life.

So maybe that's not the best place to start.

Think instead about the work itself.

Do you like solving problems?

Working with your hands?

Understanding how machines and systems work?

Creating?

Technology?

Helping people?

Precision and detail?

Seeing a tangible result at the end of the day?

Those answers can help narrow down the kinds of careers that might actually suit you, rather than simply choosing something because it sounds like a good job.

Some people can read instructions once and understand exactly what to do.

Others need to see it. Touch it. Try it. Ask a question. Make an adjustment. Try it again.

Neither way of learning is wrong.

Learning the technical steps is only part of becoming skilled at what you do.

Along the way, you're also learning how to troubleshoot when something doesn't go as planned. How to work safely. How to pay attention to details. How to use professional tools and equipment. How to ask better questions. How to communicate. How to adapt. And how to take what you've learned and apply it to a situation you haven't encountered before.

Those abilities matter because the real world doesn't always hand you a problem with the answer written underneath it.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about being able to look at your work and recognize just how far you’ve come.

For 2nd-term Welding Technician student Megan B., that sense of progress is one of the things she appreciates most about pursuing a skilled trade. There's no single definition of a "good career."

For one person, it's creating something with their hands. For another, it's solving complicated problems. It might mean working with technology, helping people, fixing what isn't working, or ending the day with something tangible to show for your effort.

What matters is finding work that fits you.

Your strengths. Your interests. The way you like to think, learn, create, and contribute.
