Cultivating concentration is a fundamental aspect of learning in a Montessori classroom, where the children are encouraged to fully immerse themselves in activities that spark their curiosity.
Dr. Montessori designed a curriculum around building attention, focus and concentration. These activities are ingeniously contrived to engage the child in sustained and purposeful activities that focus mental activity, build concentration and develop attention to detail.
Concentration is fostered through uninterrupted work cycles, a prepared environment, freedom of choice, and respect for the child’s focus. The Montessori classroom is self-directed, where the children engage themselves in purposeful, hands-on work.

LESSONS IN GRACE AND COURTESY – MONTESSORI

As we begin a new school year, it feels especially important to return to the foundations of manners, social graces, and qualities that build character. In today’s age of rapid technology, social media, and shifting parenting norms, many traditions, values, and customs that once grounded our culture seem to be fading. Yet in Montessori education, these lessons remain essential, not optional.

In the Montessori classroom and at home, Grace and Courtesy go beyond “please” and “thank you.” They are about cultivating a deep respect for ourselves, for others, and for the world around us. When children practice these skills daily, they carry them into every environment they encounter, becoming thoughtful, kind, and confident members of their communities.

“Society is not based on personal desires, but on a combination of activities that must be harmonized…”
— Maria Montessori

What is Grace?
• How we present ourselves
• How we act in social situations
• Living with dignity and authenticity

What is Courtesy?
• How we treat others
• How we respond and interact socially
• Respecting the dignity and authenticity of others

Grace and Courtesy lessons are offered at all ages, each adapted to the child’s stage of development. They rely on adult modeling and often require gentle, consistent repetition. By practicing together, we restore the value of tradition, cultivate respect, and remind children that kindness and dignity never go out of style.
