Week 1 of summer camp has officially come to an end! These campers learned about sustainability, fish science, and much more. Special thanks to Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission for giving us a tour of the Fairview hatchery and to Lake Erie Lights of PA for a Land Lighthouse tour. We’re super excited for our next 2 weeks.

One of Erie’s most unique and most visited wrecks today is the Indiana, sometimes referred to as “The Stone Wreck” by local divers. The Indiana was a bark (or barque), a 3 masted sailing ship, and as the colloquial name implies, carried a load of paving stones set for use in construction in downtown Cleveland. Built in Oswego, New York in 1852, the Indiana was lost to a storm in September of 1870. While taking on water the captain made the decision to alter course and run for Erie, however the ship was doomed. While fortunately all of the crew made it safely to shore in the lifeboat, the Indiana still rests 95 feet down on the bottom of Lake Erie.

And… that’s a Wrap! The RSC in partnership with the Erie Western Pennsylvania Port Authority, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, Erie County Department of Planning, Erie County Department of Health - Pennsylvania , and its many volunteers loaded hundreds of boats worth of shrink wrap into the Firelands Local compactor truck. From there it will be recycled into guardrail offset blocks. Special thanks to the Tom Ridge Environmental Center Foundation for providing much needed refreshments. Thanks to all that participated!

It's time to Wrap Up the Boat Shrink Wrap season! Join us this Friday, June 5th at noon to assist in loading boat shrink wrap onto the truck so it can move to the next stage of its journey in becoming guardrail offset blocks. This project was made possible through the PA DEP Coastal Resource Management Program.
