Hogarth Country Day School

Hogarth Country Day School Educating Southern NH preschoolers since 1980. All classes are taught by the owner, teaching director Andrea Murphy. A classroom aide assists Andrea in her work.

Hogarth offers two programs -- Early Kindergarten for 4 and 5 year olds and Prekindergarten for children ages 2.5 through 5 year olds. Andrea, a published children's author, writes much of the Hogarth curriculum, tailoring it to the interest and needs of the children in her classroom. For more than four decades, many of the area's youngest students have gathered to learn and grow in the big barn-t

urned-schoolhouse across from the Lamprey River in Epping, New Hampshire. Since this innovative early childhood center opened in 1980, generations of children have thrived on the Hogarth experience.

For the remainder of the school year, we’ll mainly be enjoying books by Mo Willems, whose work has long been a favorite with Hogarth preschoolers. Willems has completely cracked the preschool humor code. His books are packed with dramatic expressions, perfectly timed silliness, repetition, surprise, and just the right amount of emotional chaos for young children who can never quite get enough “silly” in their day.

Pop & Drop! The newest craze in the Hogarth classroom.

This week I introduced a math game I created that the children immediately loved. Using a dice popper or electronic spinner, they “pop” a number from 1–6 and place one bread tab on the matching plate. It’s quick, engaging, and just the right mix of fun and learning.

The room is ready.

A few balls of yarn sit waiting, and a simple rope stretched between two beams has become the beginning of something much bigger. This week, the children will spend their days Room Weaving, one of Hogarth’s most beloved traditions.

Working with a partner, they will toss balls of yarn back and forth over the rope, looping under chairs and sending the yarn across the loom again and again. Slowly, almost magically, the empty space will begin to fill. What starts as a few strands will grow into a piece of installation art. A giant, web-like soft sculpture that stretches across the room, changing and growing over the course of the week.

On the final day, the children will add their own finishing touches, weaving in paper and hanging the bugs they’ve colored and cut out, bringing the whole piece to life.

This is, without question, one of the most memorable experiences we offer at Hogarth. Former students, now grown, still ask me if we are “doing room weaving.”

Sometimes a moment in the classroom tells you everything you need to know.
This boy came over to my desk to file his report:
"I’m playing with Charlie Mae. We’re just playing with the Magnatiles."
He was perfectly content and ready to get right back to playing when he spotted "Sam and Dave Dig a Hole" sitting on my desk. Another child had just done her report about it. He grabbed the book, hugged it to his chest, and said with complete sincerity:
"I loved that one! The apples turned into pears! And I liked the dog and the cat and these boys."
That apple tree turning into a pear tree absolutely captivated him. After we read the story earlier in class, he kept coming back to it. His three-year-old mind could not quite make sense of what had happened, but he loved the mystery of it.
That right there is where so much learning lives.
This little guy is noticing details, remembering what he saw, comparing what was with what is, and trying to make meaning from it all. He does not have the words yet to explain the shift in the story, but he knows something changed, and that realization is powerful.
This was the first book this year that held every single child from beginning to end. No interruptions. No wandering off. No quiet signals that a child had disconnected from the story. Every set of eyes was on the pages.
There is something about this book that speaks directly to preschoolers. The story is simple on the surface, but underneath it offers just enough puzzle to invite children in. They sense that something is not quite right, even if they cannot fully explain it. And they want to figure it out.
Moments like this are always a treat to witness. A child, a book, and that spark of wondering.
That is where the magic begins.

Wonderful pretend play unfolded in the PK classroom today when a small group of children built their own movie theater. Long blocks became rows, square blocks became seats, and little dog and dinosaur counters arrived as the audience. When I offered the easel pocket chart as the movie screen and added sequencing cards for the “films,” the theater quickly came to life.

Pretend play like this is charming to watch, but it’s also a sign of maturing development. The children imagined a shared situation, worked together to build it, and welcomed friends who wanted to join the show.

What looks like simple make-believe is actually rich developmental work—and this little movie theater was enjoyed by quite a few busy builders and moviegoers. https://www.hogarthcountrydayschool.com/highlights-march-9-to-11-2026/
