I was debating sharing this with the community but decided to do so. This is an ordinary day in an elementary school right now. I shared this with my staff as a “Friday night reflection”. It’s long but I hope it’s worth the read.

I’m driving on my way to FINALLY see my mom and dad for Christmas. I haven’t seen them since thanksgiving and it’s long overdue. As I sit here in the passenger seat thinking back on the week I am exhausted, feel overworked, and a little bit sad. I felt so badly for all of the staff, trying to teach with so many kids absent and many not feeling well. I felt sad for the families that didn’t want to pick up the phone thinking “not again”! I felt sadness for the kids that didn’t feel well and were really sick but also wanted to stay at school and be with their teachers and friends. I felt sad for all the staff that felt exhausted, tired and stressed out. I felt sad for many staff doing “other duties as assigned”. I felt sad for my secretary and the nasty phone calls she had to filter through, the feeling of never catching up or scarfing down a lunch at 2:00 in only 10 minutes. I could go on and on about the sad things… but that’s not me.

So here’s the bright and cheery side of our work:
- one student amazingly stayed in class thanks to the support of the teacher and paras in the room!
- one student on a behavior plan transitioned to being pushed a little bit more academically
- I called a parent to quarantine their 2nd child and she told me how much she prays for all of us and has been for the past 2 years
- another parent told me what an amazing job we’re doing and they’re so happy their child has us
- we had the superintendents wife “subbing” for us on her own day off from teaching in a neighboring district because she wanted to help and keep us running
- we had a school board member come and sub as a para so we could continue with reading groups
- a retired para came and volunteered 3 hours of her day to help with the office chaos
- a staff member drove a student to meet their mom on public transportation because she didn’t have a ride here and pushes 2 young kids in a stroller
- 3 staff members work with a high needs student after school when they are obviously exhausted
- custodians working as lunch severs, delivery people, ice breakers and so much more
- paras working extra hours to prepare lunches ahead of time
- paras working at the district testing site before/after their work day to make sure we are all safe and healthy
- nurses working until late hours to connect with families and reassure them that it’s okay, we will make it through this
- district staff working behind the scenes to support us and try to make our jobs feel just a “little bit lighter” because every bit counts

So, I can list 70 million more positives than negatives. What’s the point? Have you ever been asked, “Whats your WHY?” Well… the positives are the answer to that question for me. Am I exhausted, frustrated, tired and stressed? DEFINITELY!!! Would I trade this job for an easier one.. NOT A CHANCE!

I love my staff. Rest up, enjoy some laughter and regroup so we can do it again Monday! If you need ANYTHING please call. I can listen, process or just laugh with you.

Grant Elementary Principal
