July 26th we went to Gnome Countryside where we met Mr. Rich the man in charge of the Gnome Biome. Mr. Rich met us wearing gnome clothing as well. He talked to us about the faniciful world of gnomes and showed us some of his special gnome furniture, clothing, and wares. Then we went out on the gnome trail to look for gnome houses. We even saw a gnome swing and went to the gnome playground where you could walk on the rope bridge, make a gnome playground or house out of rocks or make loud noises with rocks and a huge metal tub. We learned some nature facts as we were on the trail. Atticus the cat even joined our walk!

July 19th we went to a park for lunch and then off to Paramount Sports Complex in Palmyra area. We played in Kidmazium which is a kids play place with a huge jumping pillow and the main gym where you could jump on trampolines, jump into foam sponge pits, walk on balance beams, hang and flip on rings and swings, play games and whatever else you could think off! Everyone wanted to go back again! I think we found another favorite spot to add to our list! 😃

July 12th we went to Middle Creek for an educational nature walk and then explored the newly remodeled visitors center. There were several educational activities to do. The children really enjoyed the scavenger hunt and looking out the big windows with the binoculars to see the wild life. Enjoy the pictures!

By the way, we also learned that the land that is now part of Middle Creek was once a couple of farms. There are a few places on the property where there are cemeteries from years ago.

July 14th Cora Hurst was our guest speaker. Miss Cora is a chalk artist. The chalk picture and stories that were told while she was doing the chalk talk were a brand new set she had just put together the week before coming to us. miss Cora was taught how to do chalk talks from her mom. Then she puts special lights on the picture that make the picture seem to glow or light! It was cool!

July 5th we went to the Lehigh Valley Zoo. We enjoyed a special educational program with some special animals then we toured the zoo. We had just the right day for it. It was hot, but there was a nice breeze blowing and overcast. We made it back to the bus just as it started to rain!

The children really enjoyed the penguins, river otter, zebras, giraffes, wolves and cockatiels. Ask your child about the noise from the cockatiels - the more the kids made noise, the more the birds made noise - so loud that people on the upper hill came running down to see what the racket was all about! It was pretty funny! Even the zoo workers were laughing!

While watching the river otter swim, one of our Thermos water bottles accidentally went for a swim with the otter. The otter started playing with it and then pushed it over to the side. We were all wondering how we would get it out when a zoo keeper came to the rescue. She had to go into the cage and fish out the water bottle. She said this happens about 20 times a day! We had to be one of those 20! It all worked out!

The lemurs live on an island at the zoo and there is no cage around the island. One of the children asked how they keep the lemurs in their spot with no cage. We learned that the lemurs will not leave the island because they do not like water at all - so they stay there! 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎

June 30th we had some special guest speakers come with their dogs. They are part of Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central America. This organization is for people in need - physical, emotional, who need the help of a service dog. It is designed for both the dog and the person they will be living with and helping, to train together. Two different people came and showed their dogs and what they are trained to do. The one guest has mobility issues and cannot bend down to the floor, so her dog is being trained to pick things up that she drops and bring them to her. Reba, the other bigger dog, is being trained to assist her owner in bringing things to her, warning her of danger and helping her to stand eventually - they have not gotten that far yet. Everyone had so much fun when Reba was allowed off her leash to run around the room. Those that wanted to could give the dog treats after giving the dog a command or simply allowing to be pet. 😊

June 28th we went to Historic Rockford in Lancaster, PA. They provided some excellent educational programming on life long ago. Historic Rockford was the home of General Edward Hand who was a general in the Revolutionary War. He was also close friends with George Washington.

We learned a little bit about General Edward Hand and his family. We also learned about the architecture of that day, the plants they discovered were or weren't good for use in cooking or healing back then. We learned that cooking back then we so much different than today! We learned about the special Holiday Dance they would have held at the house and what type of manners were expected from everyone attending. We also had a special Patriotic story time, played some games and made a craft. The staff there really went out of their way to make our day a special day!

June 23rd we held our very first AAA Bike Rodeo. In order to participate, children needed to wear a helmet and have a bike of some sort. We had Big Wheels, bikes with training wheels and regular bikes. Children watched a Bike Safety Camp video that talked about being safe on the road while riding your bike and went over the hand signals that should be used while bike riding. Then we went outside and completed 6 bike safety stations that showed us that the most important skill is to be in control of your bike at all times. Some of the stations sounded easy, but took more skill than you would think. We also had a helmet drawing and a boy and a girl from each division were picked as winners of new bike helmets. Afterwards, we rode our bikes in the back parking lots with our friends and had fun! Everyone was tired by the time we were done! Everyone agreed we should have this again next year! So we may have created an annual AAA Bike Safety Rodeo as part of our summer program! So practice up for next summer! 😀

June 21st we went to Inspire Pottery and Renee's New Beginnings Ceramics in Denver, PA.

At Inspire Pottery, we saw a clay demonstration on the pottery wheel. Then we followed the steps the bowl would go through before becoming a finished bowl. We also got to tour the shop and saw many clay projects in progress. Look at the size of some of those clay pieces! 😊

At Renee's New Beginning Ceramics, we learned that it takes a long time to make a ceramic. Ceramics are made from liquid clay which is pumped into a mold. Once the liquid clay is dry, the ceramic is then taken out of the mold to finish drying, which is when it turns white. We also saw the big kiln the ceramics are put in to be fired after they are glazed.

The best part was that everyone was able to choose a ceramic to paint and then the next week they were brought back to us to take home! All the projects looked awesome!
