Our 4000 students are served in five elementary schools (Black Diamond, Byron Kibler, Southwood, Sunrise and Westwood), two middle schools (Enumclaw and Thunder Mountain) and Enumclaw High School. Included in the district are the cities of Enumclaw, Black Diamond and several unincorporated communities. The Enumclaw School District (District) maintains this page as an avenue to communicate

important news and information to students, staff, and the public. The District respects the differing opinions of our community, however, this page is not intended to be an open public forum. The District encourages community members to comment on its posts to provide their opinions and feedback to the District, but all comments must be kept to the topic of the District’s original post. Our audience includes families and school-aged children, and users should keep that audience in mind when making comments. Kindergarten conferences wrapped up last week and helped our students and families start the school year with confidence!

These individual meetings give incoming kindergarten students and families an opportunity to meet their teacher, explore the classroom, ask questions and begin building a strong school-family partnership.

We are excited to welcome our newest learners to our elementary schools this week and support them as they take this important first step in their educational journey.

Whether today is your very first day in the Enumclaw School District, your first day transitioning to a new school, or your first day back with familiar teachers and friends, we are here to support you, welcome you and help you start the year with confidence.

✏️ As the new school year begins, let’s build positive attendance habits together!

The district has set a specific attendance goal this year: to meet Washington’s statewide goal of 81% of students attending regularly in 2026–27. Enumclaw School District’s rate currently stands at about 76%, with elementary schools above the state average and secondary schools below.

The state defines regular attendance as missing no more than two days per month, which translates to attending school at least 90% of the time. Research shows that regular attendance is a key indicator of student academic achievement.

“With 180 days in the school year, every day is valuable,” said Superintendent Mark Wenzel. “We see a strong connection between attendance, grades and graduation rates. We value our partnership with parents and families in helping students attend regularly to reach this goal.”

✨What Families Can Do ✨

✅ Check the numbers. Absences add up a day at a time, and most of us are surprised by the total. A quick check of Family Access once a month can help families spot patterns early and keep attendance on track.

✅ Build routines that support attendance. Consistent school-night bedtimes, phones charging outside the bedroom, and getting clothes, backpacks and lunches ready the night before can make mornings easier for the whole family.

✅ Plan appointments and travel around school when possible. We know some absences are unavoidable. When there’s flexibility, scheduling appointments, vacations and other activities outside the school day helps students stay connected to their learning.

✅ Let us know if something’s getting in the way. Anxiety, a tough class, transportation challenges or a hard stretch at home can all contribute to attendance struggles, and they’re much easier to address early. A call to the school counselor is a good first step.

Families know their students best, and schools are here to help. By communicating early and working together, we can strengthen attendance and help every student stay connected, supported and ready to learn.

Thank you to all of our students and families who joined us for Back-to-School events!

Our schools were full of energy as students explored their classrooms, reconnected with friends, met their teachers and helped their families get ready for the year ahead. These moments are an important part of building the relationships and sense of belonging that help students start the school year feeling welcomed, connected and ready to learn.

We loved seeing so many familiar faces and welcoming new families into our school communities. Thank you to our staff for preparing such a warm welcome, and to our families for partnering with us to make this a great year for students.

Top Priority: Quality Instruction

District leaders and teachers invested time this month discussing powerful teaching and learning. School leaders examined strengths and areas for growth in student data—and connected School Improvement Plans to the District Improvement Plan.

Teachers dedicated time to reviewing curriculum, teaching approaches and new tools in special education, literacy and math. The math training, called “Building Thinking Classrooms,” was brought back after teachers gave it top ratings last summer. It focuses on keeping students engaged, excited to learn, and thinking deeply through 14 teaching practices that research shows optimize math instruction.
