Talking with your child about a difficult deathâespecially a su***deâcan feel overwhelming. But honesty, in age-appropriate language, is essential.
Young children need small, clear explanations. Older kids and teens may ask more complex questions. Follow their lead. Itâs okay to say âI donât knowâ if you truly donât have all the answers.
Saying something like, âYour mom died by su***de. That means she caused her own death,â might feel hardâbut children often hear the word and need help understanding it.
If you havenât known how to talk about it before, be gentle with yourself. Youâre grieving too. What matters most now is creating a safe space for honest conversations to begin.

Children want to be recognized and have their pain and confusion acknowledged. To validate and support a grieving child that asks
difficult questions, we can respond in ways like this:
⢠âWhat youâre thinking (or feeling) is normal.â
⢠âYou are OK.â
⢠âItâs natural (or normal) to feel that way.â
What we donât want is to minimize their feelings by
saying things like this:
⢠âYou shouldnât feel like that.â
⢠âDonât worry.â
⢠âThatâs silly.â
You don't have to have all the answers. Just listen, and love them.

From the moment we hear their first cries, we want to protect our children from lifeâs sorrows. While we can't shield them entirely, we do our bestâproviding joy, keeping them safe, and reassuring them.
Yet, loss and tragedy are inevitable: a loved oneâs death, a house fire, or the loss of a beloved pet. As we navigate our own grief, we must also guide our children through theirs.
We canât control everything in life, but there are ways to help grieving children cope and heal.
