, Make andTake: Careers in Manufacturing

This week, students from 8 schools across Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, and Perry Counties joined us at the CAIU for a hands-on Interactive Discovery Lab exploring careers in manufacturing.

And they left with something big: a clearer picture of what comes next.

What students told us:

✅ 95% feel more confident about their future
✅ 95% are more motivated to pursue training or education
✅ 82% said the session supported their mental health by clarifying life after high school
✅ 68% discovered a new career
✅ 64% plan to explore the field further
✅ 55% gained awareness of Work-Based Learning opportunities
✅ 36% connected with professionals and exchanged contact info

In their own words:
💬 I learned about an amazing pre-apprenticeship program thats available to me that Id really like to pursue.
💬 There are so many more career options available than I was previously considering.
💬 I learned how to make robots and how to manage them.
💬 There are places for me to go. I need to research and plan transportation and maybe opportunities closer.
That last quote says it all. Awareness is the first step, and access is the next one.

A big thanks to Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. for hosting our Shipping and Transportation Career Connections session!

Freight and logistics keep literally everything moving — from the food on our tables to the packages at our doors — and the industry is actively recruiting the next generation of drivers, dispatchers, and logistics coordinators

🚛 The U.S. trucking industry will need nearly 500,000 new drivers by the end of 2026 to keep up with demand and replace retiring workers.
