Sometimes the best nights aren’t the ones that go according to plan.
Last night was supposed to be our PiYo on the Salt Flats—a class I’ve been planning for months and looking forward to since last year. I had everything prepared and was so excited to share this experience again.
Then the weather had other plans...
After months of dry conditions, a huge storm rolled through just as we were headed to the Salt Flats. The sky turned brown, the wind was intense, lightning was striking, and visibility became almost nonexistent. We were right in the middle of what looked like a Dust Bowl. The Refuge made the right call and canceled the class because of the lightning, so we turned around and headed back toward Enid.
I’ll be honest, I was very disappointed. I had put a lot into making that night happen, and it was hard to watch it all change in a matter of minutes.
But somewhere between the disappointment and the chaos, we decided to make the best of it.
I reached out in a group call to check in and inform the girls and then we made a last-minute plan to bring PiYo back to the park before dark. And these women? They showed up. They rolled with the changes, stayed flexible, and joined me for an evening that ended up being pretty special in its own way.
We moved, we laughed, and by the time class was over, the storm had passed. With the song "Holocene" playing, and our bodies still in Savasana, the sun set, the skies had cleared, and I found myself a bit emotional thinking about how often life works this way.
We make the plans. We prepare. We look forward to something. And sometimes, circumstances completely change the direction.
We don’t always get to choose what happens, but we do get to choose what we do with it.
Last night reminded me that the experience isn’t always about the location, the perfect conditions, or everything going exactly as planned. Sometimes it’s about the people who are willing to pivot with you, show up anyway, and make the unexpected moments just as meaningful.
The Salt Flats class will happen. We’ll reschedule it, and when the conditions are right, we’ll make that experience happen.
But for now, I’m grateful for the women who were willing to roll with the chaos and make a Plan B pretty damn good. ❤️
Sometimes the best memories are the ones you never planned for. All of my love and light🫶 Steph
