Most job programs for autistic adults teach the interview. This one teaches the trade.
When Danny Combs started Teaching the Autism Community Trades in Denver, 13 insurance companies turned him down. Nobody wanted to cover the idea of putting welding torches and power tools in autistic hands. The fourteenth said yes.
Eight years on, TACT runs hands-on training in welding, carpentry, auto mechanics, electrical and technology, alongside the executive functioning and problem-solving work that makes a job stick. Then it does the part most programs skip: job coaches, placement support, and partnerships with more than 60 Denver-area businesses. Its reported placement rate is 83.3%.
How to find them:
Based in Denver, with a second location in Carbondale, Colorado. Programs run for teens through adults, including a specialized day school for 18 to 21-year-olds that works alongside school transition plans. They accept Colorado DVR funding and SLS and DD waivers, and will work with families paying privately. Summer camps run from age seven.
