HUMANEX ACADEMY is a private middle and high school serving neurodivergent students.

HUMANEX ACADEMY is a private, non-traditional middle and high school which provides a structured and supportive environment for students with a wide variety of learning, behavioral, and emotional needs. Our primary elements--an academic curriculum which accommodates each student’s current abilities, extensive counseling support, and a solution-focused, empathy based approach to behavior management--are the mainstays of our school and have allowed us to help numerous young people become confident and productive adults since 1983. The only program of its kind in the Denver area, Humanex Academy works with students who have been diagnosed with or thought to have learning differences, ADD, ADHD, Autism, twice-exceptional learning, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and many other unique needs.

More time. More depth. More ways to learn.

This week, our regular schedule shifted for Block Days, giving students and teachers extended class periods to slow down, dig deeper, and learn in ways that aren’t always possible in a traditional 45-minute class.

And they made the most of it.

🥒 Pickleball and Red Rocks hikes in PE
🐛 Building insect hotels in Zoology
🎨 Exploring drawing in art and Hispanic artists in Spanish
⚙️ Designing and testing Rube Goldberg machines in science
🎸 Taking Music Appreciation on the road to Guitar Center

Block Days aren’t simply longer classes. They create space for experiential learning, creativity, movement, collaboration, problem-solving, and connection—all while giving students a chance to engage with their learning in different ways.

At Humanex, we know that meaningful learning doesn’t always happen sitting at a desk. Sometimes it happens on a trail, with a pencil in hand, while building something that almost works, or while discovering something new alongside your classmates.

This week was a pretty great example.

🚀 Launch with Purpose is back!

At Humanex, we believe preparing for life after high school is about more than choosing a college or checking a box. It’s about helping students understand themselves, explore what’s possible, ask questions, make connections, and begin to picture a future that works for them.

That’s why we created Launch with Purpose, our neurodiversity-affirming Transition Fair.

Students will have the opportunity to connect directly with organizations representing a variety of pathways and supports — including higher education, trades, employment and internships, independent living, transition services, and more.

There is no single “right” path after high school. Launch with Purpose gives students space to explore their options, learn about resources in our community, and start discovering what their own next steps might look like.

This is a student-focused event, with families welcome to join the exploration. Students of all grade levels are encouraged to attend, and attendance is required for Humanex juniors & seniors.

🧪 Classroom Spotlight: Science in Action

This week in Mx. Stanley-Browning’s science class, students explored the difference between physical and chemical changes through hands-on investigation.

Rather than simply learning definitions, students had the opportunity to observe changes as they happened, look for evidence, ask questions, and determine what was actually occurring with the materials in front of them.

These kinds of hands-on experiences give students another way into the content, turning an abstract science concept into something they can see, test, discuss, and make sense of together.

Learning at Humanex is at its best when students have opportunities to be curious, engage actively, and build understanding through experience. 🔬🧪

💬 September Personal Growth Skill: Communication

At Humanex, communication is about much more than finding the right words.

It’s asking for clarification when you’re confused.
Listening to understand someone else’s perspective.
Advocating for what you need.
Recognizing when your message didn’t land the way you intended.
And sometimes, it’s having the courage to try again.

This month, our students and staff are exploring Communication as part of our yearlong theme of Belonging.

Because belonging doesn’t mean we always understand one another perfectly. It means we’re building a community where people have the space to speak, listen, ask, clarify, repair, and connect.

Those are skills we practice at Humanex every day, in the classroom, around the lunch table, with friends, and with the adults who support us.

📸 This Week at Humanex

From Oreo moon phases to resume detectives, it was another full week of learning, creating, connecting, and belonging at Humanex!

💬 At Tuesday’s All School Meeting, we launched September’s Personal Growth Skill: Communication. Students and staff explored how the way we speak, listen, advocate, and make space for others all contribute to a sense of belonging.

📝 In Junior Transition, students became “resume detectives,” spotting errors and learning what helps a resume stand out for the right reasons.

🌎 Geography students practiced creating map scales and representing real-world distances, while 🌙 Middle School Space & Astronomy students used Oreos to model the phases of the moon.

🎨 In Art, students experimented with different mediums, discovering how different materials and techniques can shape an idea in new ways.

And some of our favorite moments happened outside of class. Around lunch tables and during break, students talked, laughed, played chess and ping pong, welcomed others into the group, and took the initiative to write shout-outs recognizing their peers.

Those moments may seem small, but they’re a big part of what we’re building.

Belonging isn’t only something we talk about at Humanex. It’s something our students are building together every day.

We had such a wonderful turnout for our first Humanex Family Gathering of the school year at Brewability & Pizzability on Saturday!

Families had the chance to meet one another, catch up, share great conversation, and simply spend time together outside of the school day. These moments of connection are an important part of what makes the Humanex community so special — creating relationships not just among our students and staff, but among our families, too.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped kick off the year with such a strong sense of community. And a big thank you to Brewability for welcoming and hosting us!

Here’s to many more opportunities to connect throughout the year.

✨ This Week at Humanex ✨

Two weeks in, and our classrooms are already full of curiosity, movement, problem-solving, and plenty of opportunities to learn by doing.

☀️ Space & Astronomy students built and tested solar ovens, putting science and design to work.

➗ Math showed up in all kinds of ways — from students demonstrating their thinking at the whiteboard to an engaging fractions lesson with Mr. Maller.

🧪 In science, students made oobleck and explored the wonderfully messy question: Are non-Newtonian fluids more like liquids or solids?

🏃 And learning wasn’t limited to the classroom. PE students headed to the park for obstacle courses and spent time working out at the rec center.

What we love most about these moments isn’t just what students are learning. It’s seeing them ask questions, try something, explain their thinking, move their bodies, make mistakes, adjust, and try again.

That’s Be Curious in action — and exactly the kind of learning we want to keep building all year long. 💙

Humanex parents and guardians are invited to join us tonight, Wednesday, August 26 at 5:00 PM for our Virtual Parent/Guardian Orientation.

This session is especially helpful for families who are new to Humanex, as we'll share important information about the year ahead, answer questions, and help you get to know some of the rhythms and expectations of our school community. Returning families are absolutely welcome to join us, too!
