BKD is a tuition free, educational non-profit program working in conjunction with DPS and Kent Denver

Breakthrough Kent Denver is a tuition free, educational non-profit program working in conjunction with Denver Public Schools and Kent Denver School to provide increased educational opportunities for under-resourced middle school students from Denver public middle schools. We also train and encourage talented high school and college students to enter careers in urban education. Breakthrough’s objective for the middle school students we serve is to measure academic success by achieving near one hundred percent high-school graduation rates and college enrollment, a statistic that far exceeds our students’ peer group. Additionally, Breakthrough’s intention in training college age students in teaching methodology is to create a pipeline leading to careers in education, following college graduation.

Nashaii once didn’t see college as part of her future. Through Breakthrough—and the support of people like College Bound Manager, Parker Groves—she found the encouragement to pursue it.

“Breakthrough has impacted my life by helping me step outside of my comfort zone to become a leader in other communities, including the Breakthrough community.”

Her story captures the ripple effect at the heart of Breakthrough: a student who once couldn’t picture herself in college returned to help other young people imagine what might be possible for them.

A new school year means the next chapter of Breakthrough Denver is underway.

While our six-week summer program may be our most intensive learning experience, students remain connected to Breakthrough throughout the school year as they strengthen academic skills, prepare for college, explore future opportunities, and stay connected to a supportive community.

Summer is only one part of the Breakthrough journey. We’re excited for everything this school year will bring.

For Destiny, Breakthrough Denver is about more than academics — it’s about belonging.

As a 10th grader, Destiny is continuing to grow alongside a community committed to supporting her throughout high school and on the path to college.

That sense of connection is at the heart of the Breakthrough experience.

This summer, for six weeks, nearly 200 students came together with 33 Teaching Fellows and 26 high school volunteers for a summer filled with rigorous learning, meaningful relationships, and opportunities to grow.

But the numbers tell only part of the story. Behind each one is a student building confidence, an aspiring educator developing their skills, and a community invested in what comes next.

HEYYY BREAKTHROUGH! HEY WHAT?! 📣

We just wrapped up Week 2, and what a week it was! This week, we had the Breakthrough Olympics, where families battled it out to see who would take first place! 🏆 From watermelon-eating competitions 🍉 and water relays to soccer ⚽ and so much more, our students brought the energy and showed up for their families!

We also want to give a HUGE shoutout to our amazing 9th and 10th graders, who helped pack burritos for the Delores Project here in Denver! We are so proud to see our students giving back and making a difference in our community! 💙🧡

HEYYY Breakthrough! We just wrapped up Spirit Day! 💙🧡

Our teaching fellows came in full of energy until Breakdown showed up and stole their spirit. It was up to our students to save the day by creating team chants 📣,designing banners 🎨, and battling it out on the dance floor 💃 to earn their teachers’ spirit back.

By the end of the day, the spirit was back, and we were more than ready to kick off an unforgettable summer. ✨

At Breakthrough Denver, we believe education opens doors and creates pathways for young people to lead, succeed, and strengthen their communities. As we reflect on this important day, we recommit ourselves to supporting students and developing the next generation of educators and leaders.
