We had the most amazing adventure at Aullwood Garden MetroPark today! John and Marie Aull donated a ton of land to the community, but this particular area is where they actually lived and created their garden. We could see their love and creativity in every detail and are so appreciative of their contributions.

We love Earl Heck Community Center! The center is an awesome community resource and they have been so supportive of Engaging Days since the start.

We partnered with Legacy Batting Cages - Legacy Sports for this event and hope it gave the seniors an opportunity to see what a great asset they are to the community too! Did you know they are not just batting cages? They place high importance on being a place where people of all ages and abilities can find something they enjoy, and that is right up our alley! They even have a weekly senior coffee club where participants can enjoy donuts and tabletop games for free, or use the batting cages and lawn games for just $5. What a great way for local seniors to stay active and engaged with their community!

Just as we honor our human friends when they pass, we would like to take a moment to honor our beloved therapy dog, Herbie.

Herbie (and his dad, Ken) had been part of the Engaging Days team almost since the start. He was not a flashy boy. He wasn't one to show off tricks or run around with playful energy. But he was so special in another way. Herbie had a superpower. When nothing else could soothe restless clients towards the end of their lives and when nothing else could make them smile, Herbie could. Pictured below was one such moment for our client, Arlene, not long before she left this world. She was very tired in her last months, and this was a particularly tough day. I (Abbey) was actually in the process of pushing her back to our quiet room where she could lay down and rest, but she indicated that she wanted to stop and see Herbie as we passed through. As soon as he was within her reach, she reached out to hold his paw and they sat like that for a few minutes as she talked quietly to him. He did not pull away or move at all. He seemed to know exactly what she needed in that moment and he gave it to her. A moment of comfort in a time she needed it most. I had been watching my friend struggle for quite some time, so this moment of respite brought me to tears. This was not the only time Herbie was the hero for one of our clients (and for me), and I will always be so thankful for what he gave to all of us.

Herbie, you are already so missed. Aside from your parents, I believe I will miss you most of all. Don't tell your brother, but your visits were always my favorite.

This is great! A fall can be catastrophic for our senior friends.

The Earl Heck Community Center will be hosting another Stepping On balance workshop at our facility this fall. This free seven-week workshop will teach you simple ways to improve your balance and reduce fall risks at home and in daily life. Research has shown that this program has been proven to reduce falls by 30%. Classes will be held at the Earl Heck Center on Tuesdays from 3:00-5:00 PM beginning on October 6th. Here's an activity anyone can create at home! Clear out your cluttered tupperware cabinet (because we all have one) and ask your loved one to match up each container with its lid. Make sure ahead of time that each container really does have a lid to ensure this is a failure free activity. It's also important to know what each individual can handle. The two clients pictured were not overwhelmed by having everything in front of them at once, but many individuals with dementia may find this overwhelming. This activity is so easily customizable for your loved one!

Krissy and Seth (with Senior Music Connection) came yesterday to provide a wonderful Hymn Sing for our clients. While our clients love a wide range of music, hymns are ALWAYS a top favorite that resonates with just about everyone. As you can see, our buddy Brian was a big fan of "This Little Light of Mine"!
