What is ✨phonemic awareness✨?

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken words. This is an essential skill that is required for a fluent reader. Phonemic awareness is developed through wordplay. These are auditory activities that do ✨not✨ require any writing or written language.

Some examples of exercises that can be used for developing phonemic awareness are:
✨Phoneme Segmentation: breaking words into individual sounds
✨Phoneme Blending: combining/blending individual sounds to form a word
✨Phoneme Isolation: identify beginning, middle, or ending sound(s) within a word
✨Phoneme Manipulation: adding, deleting, or substituting sounds to create a new word
✨Rhyming and Alliteration: identifying similar sounds at the beginning or ending of words

✨Developing phonemic awareness is one of our goals for our summer, reading readiness camp: Strong Start!✨

✨If you believe your child could use a boost and they are going to be entering kindergarten or first grade next fall, consider enrolling them in our Strong Start Reading Readiness Camp this coming summer!✨

Reading readiness is a term that indicates a stage in a child's development typically occurring between the ages of four and six. If a child has reading readiness, they have developed the basic cognitive, linguistic, and motor skills to learn to read. This stage will lay the groundwork for future literacy success.

Some examples of reading readiness are:
*letter identification (even if only a few letters)
*The ability to hold a book
*phonemic awareness
*an interest in books
*the ability to sit and listen to a story for short periods of time.

If your child is going to be entering kindergarten or first grade next fall, consider enrolling your them in our Strong Start Reading Readiness Camp for the summer of 2026!

When it comes to reading comprehension, vocabulary knowledge is essential. Without a strong vocabulary, readers may struggle to make sense of the texts they encounter.

Reading aloud together, playing words games, and encouraging a variety of texts can help a child develop a larger vocabulary and world view which ultimately helps their reading comprehension!

For more information about vocabulary and its importance to reading comprehension, check out our blog post on our website!

Dyslexia impacts more than just a person's ability to read and write; it also impacts their mental and emotional well-being. Oftentimes, the avoidant behavior and unexplained outbursts could be an indicator of something else going on beneath the surface.

We are still in October which is Dyslexia Awareness Month! If you know someone with dyslexia, remember that they're more than their learning difference! They're unique and complex just like you.
