Our Grays and Torreys class was busy exploring pumpkins this week! Ms. Taylor and Ms. Bailey set out books about pumpkins along with a pumpkin, watercolors, markers, and paper, asking "what do you notice about this pumpkin?" After exploring the textures and colors, the children colored or painted what they were feeling and seeing. As they talked about the smell, weight, and how hard the outside was, and shared about fall, including Halloween, and pumpkin foods like pie and seeds, they were busy building language and vocabulary and sharpening their observation skills.

The children then used golf tees and child safe hammers to hammer the tees into pumpkins, practicing grasping, aiming, and hammering with control. Each tap built fine motor skills and hand eye coordination, while the focus and problem solving involved helped them explore cause and effect.

To end the week, the children opened up the pumpkin to feel and smell the inside, exploring the seeds and stringy texture while making new observations and comparisons to what they'd seen on the outside.

Our Mt. Blue Sky classroom set out paint, corks, and paper rolls as an invitation to explore. Before long, these simple materials became paint tools, building blocks, and so much more!

Loose parts offer children endless opportunities to explore their ideas, make choices, and discover what they can create. As they build, experiment, and try new things, they are developing their creativity and problem solving skills while learning through trial and error.

We love seeing where their creativity takes them!

Our Roxborough classroom returned to collaborating with water colors and to a tool they really enjoyed using in the past, sponges!! The sponges were filled with different colors of watercolor paint. The children enjoyed squeezing the paint out and patting the squishy texture of the sponge. Ms. Emily also introduced a new word/technique which was "dab/dabbing". The children dabbed the sponges along the paper and noticed the colors it left behind. This investigation promoted fine motor skills, sensory awareness, understanding cause and effect, and promoted new vocabulary.

While exploring our pumpkin patch, the Maroon Bells class noticed sunflowers towering above them and that simple observation sparked a hands on investigation.

The children wondered: How do sunflowers grow so tall? What's inside the stem? Where are the seeds hiding, and how many are there?

Using tongs, magnifying glasses, measuring cups, and a microscope, they counted seeds, cut open stems to explore what was inside, and examined details easy to miss. Along the way, they practiced fine motor skills, observation, counting, prediction, and teamwork.

Child-led exploration gives kids the time and space to follow their curiosity, ask meaningful questions, and build confidence as capable learners. When we provide the tools and step back, their wonder leads the way.

A simple moment in the pumpkin patch became an invitation to investigate and discover.

Last week, the infants in our Harvard Gulch class spent their days exploring a variety of tactile sensory provocations. These hands-on experiences support development across many areas while encouraging curiosity and discovery.
The class began by using their hands and feet to explore different fabrics. Ms. Ashley talked about each item and introduced descriptive words like soft, rough, smooth, and bumpy.
The class also explored materials from nature! Some friends especially enjoyed running their hands over the smooth pieces of bark, while others preferred investigating the leaves and pinecones.
To end the week, the class explored large ice cubes and frozen scarves, feeling the cold against their hands as they pushed the ice and crinkled the scarves.
As children explore new sensations, they make connections about the world around them. They build new vocabulary and learn ways to describe their environment while strengthening the small muscles in their hands and developing coordination through touching, grasping, pushing, and exploring. 🌿💛
