Did you ever think about why we can read so many different fonts without much effort? It’s because our brains don’t store words as whole words. We store away letters (symbols) and sounds. We use the facial recognition part of the brain to store letters. So the same reason why you can recognize someone when they change their hair cut or put on makeup is the same reason why you can read different fonts! Brains are so cool!!! 🧠🤓🤔

Learning styles are a myth in the learning science world. So why is this theory perpetuated so much in the education world? Partially I think it makes it so that blame can be put on teachers and learners instead of admin, law makers, and curriculum companies. The reason why the learner isn’t accepting is because the teacher isn’t differentiating to their specific learning style. The learner isn’t picking up the general ed curriculum because they have a different learning style. BOTH ARE UNFOUNDED AND UNTRUE STATEMENTS!

Irregular words are wacky! The vowels don’t behave! When teaching red words, it important to point out what letters make the word tricky!! It simplifies what the brain needs to remember and allows for orthographic mapping to happen easier. Make sure you explain to the student or have the students explain to you, what makes the word wacky!

I ❤️ my blending binder! It’s the best tool for teaching blending of words! It keeps everything organized and easy to change up the order! Although the picture has a real word, I mostly use the blending board for nonsense words. It is a great way to assess our ability to sound out real words. Every word starts as a nonsense word until it is read by automatically!

As a community, we need to look at what it is we are teaching, if it aligns with research, and if it is actually working to give high quality instruction to ALL students. As educators we should always be driving to make learning accessible to everyone!

“Canaries in a coal mine” is the perfect analogy when it comes to reading instruction! The kids who never get it are only a small percentage of the kids who are hanging on for dear life and barely making it through. Let’s catch kids before they fall!!!
