1978 John Philip Sousa Award - thanks to Jim P**a, U-E Class of 1978 who donated his Sousa Award to the Endicott Museum. This prestigious award is given to top high school band students to recognize superior musicianship, leadership, dependability, loyalty, and dedication. Band directors at high schools can present the official John Philip Sousa Award to a top graduating senior each year. Congrats to Jim P**a - a proud U-E Tiger! You can see Jim’s award displayed in our Union-Endicott Room.

Walter Breakey’s 25 Years IBM Certificate of Honor was bestowed on him the year before the IBM Quarter Century Club had its first formal gathering. The IBM Quarter Century Club (QCC) is a corporate organization and tradition established to honor employees who reach 25 years of service with IBM. The first gathering of the QCC took place on June 21, 1924 in Atlantic City, with 42 charter members. Inductees were traditionally honored with manager-hosted dinners or luncheons, often allowing invitations for family, friends and colleagues. Traditionally, the inductee received several small gifts such as pins and a keychain. As well, the employee received a catalog for selection of a milestone gift such as a watch, Atmos clock, Weber grill, etc.

We are grateful to Roberta Rittenhouse, Walter Breakey’s granddaughter for the donation of his Certificate of Honor (on display in our IBM Room), the October 29, 1929 picture at the Hotel Arlington posted previously, and this 1948 picture of the Quarter Century Club dinner with Thomas J. Watson, Sr. at the head table.

October 29, 1929 - Black Tuesday - the infamous Stock Market Crash that was the catalyst for the Great Depression of the 1930’s. That night IBM was celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the start of the Bundy Time Recording Company which later became ITR and then IBM. The dinner was held in the Hotel Arlington, Binghamton. What must have been going through the minds of these people at a planned celebration on the day that began a global dark era?

IBM stock actually held a resilient valuation around $129 per share after the Crash, down from earlier highs ($251), but showing relative long-term strength compared to collapsing speculative stocks. Thomas J. Watson, Sr. led IBM through the ensuing Great Depression by focusing on continuous manufacturing and customer service.

The 1930’s Great Depression posed an extraordinary economic test, yet IBM displayed resilience by maintaining investments in personnel, manufacturing, and technological advancements during this challenging period. Rather than downsizing its workforce, Watson opted to hire additional salesmen and engineers in alignment with President Franklin Roosevelt’s National Recovery Administration plan.

During this era, IBM emerged as a pioneering corporation by instituting employee benefits such as group life insurance (1934), survivor benefits (1935), and paid vacations (1936). The company furthered its commitment by establishing the IBM Schoolhouse in Endicott and constructing a modern research laboratory at the same location.
