During the inaugural session of Camp Westmark: Ready Readers this summer, our K–2 campers enjoyed a daily dose of language enrichment. To build phonemic awareness, comprehension, and more foundational reading skills, the budding bookworms and storytellers engaged in critical yet playful literacy development, including:

🔸🔹 Using felt squares to "tap" words into individual sounds and practice secret code blending

🍦 Diving into story elements, punctuation, and vocabulary through the popular Elephant and Piggie picture book "Should I Share My Ice Cream?"

🔠 Focusing on letter sizes and shapes in order to start distinguishing uppercase vs. lowercase letters

✍ Forming happy handwriting habits when it comes to posture, pencil grip, paper position, and letter formation

So rewarding to draw from Westmark's expertise in the Science of Reading to boost the reading readiness of our campers.

Here's a Head of School "hello" from Nashville, where Ms. Koochek has been attending the 2026 Leadership Summit of the Association of LD Schools—a golden opportunity for leaders to connect, recharge, and build up current and future leaders of schools that serve students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.

At this leadership retreat, Ms. Koochek co-presented twice with fellow experts on the topics of sustaining school culture (especially in the face of loss) and women advancing in LD education. Thank you to our Head of School for representing us so well in the field and always championing learners with distinct learning styles.

These Westmark teens have made the most of summer, getting ahead on graduation requirements by taking credit courses (Geometry or ASL I) or boosting their academic writing or executive function skills through two-week intensives. Been nice having you over break, Upper Schoolers!
