THE GREAT AMERICAN MELTDOWN

PART 1 - WHEN GOOD MARRIAGES GO BAD

After studying human behavior for more years than I care to mention, I can honestly say that certain natural laws prevail in all matters of maintaining a healthy relationship. I have been advising clients for more than 20 years and it is heartbreaking to witness the levels of anxiety that we trigger in one another unnecessarily. Some of my clients come in with their head down and their identity lost while others arrive with a chip on their shoulder and an imaginary weapon firing from their hearts. Whether it’s Boredom, Addiction, Neglect, Infidelity, Isolation, Exhaustion, Financial Disappointment or Self Absorption, there is always something that went unattended and misunderstood in producing such outcomes. Often it is a combination of the above-mentioned symptoms that have our perception of life taking on a more lack luster appeal. Some feel imprisoned in a relationship while others feel entitled to use the relationship in meeting all their dysfunctional wants and needs. Regardless, both parties eventually end up feeling disappointed and justified in their decision to leave the relationship and start over.

Today, exiting a relationship has almost become fashionable. My current husband of 18 years (a second marriage) and I had recently joined another couple for lunch. Conversation was quite light-hearted when suddenly Monica says, “Everyone at this table has an EX”. My heart sank a little as I never thought of myself as EX material or even being a candidate for having an EX. Yet, here I was, no different than any of my clients trying to figure out how to breathe in a relationship that was once supposedly destined for eternal happiness. In that moment, I remembered feeling displaced and ill-prepared for such a dramatic change. I had been married 20 years the first time, before deciding to finally part ways. It was very weird as my entire young adulthood had matured or grown up with this person and to leave felt like being dropped off in a third world country without knowing the language. Worse yet, at 40, I was too old to be young and too young to be old, yet everyone expected me to recover quite easily on my own without direction or an understanding of life in the single lane 20 years later. All I can say is “ Scary”!

After 9 years of becoming human and many hit and misses, I finally met my current husband. However, during this 9 year phase of transformation, I learned a great deal about human nature. With every mistake made, every disappointment, every faux pas, came an epiphany. It was truly the school of hard knocks but being rather naïve by nature I would just put the experience in the WHOOPS column of things never to revisit. It was this innocent process of elimination that later served as the impetus for my future to come. Eventually, I began to experience a new sense of self mastery and awareness. This brought about a confidence that opened doors of opportunity and a flood of wisdom and remarkable experiences into my life. If you are in a place of transition, now is the time to embark upon self-mastery. It is time to figure out what really makes you tick and how to beat the clock in recovering from the previous bout of poor time management. Had you succeeded, you would not be searching for a better way to maximize your talents at this stage of the game.

Consider right now as an opportunity to finally do what you want, to do what you were meant to do. Figure out what gets you going and makes you want to get up in the morning. All of this begins with a strong understanding of YOU.
