STREAMING CLASS: Head Quicksketch

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Head Quicksketch, much like Figure Quicksketch, is a great way to develop one’s ability to skip steps and judge proportions, distances, and angles accurately and without the need to stop and measure. Gaining these abilities requires an intuitive understanding of plumb lines, negative shapes, and angles. The first half of the term will focus on the use of these tools to create gesture and structural type quicksketch head drawings. The second half of the term will focus on how to skip key steps and use a more shadow mapped and tonal approach. The human head is every bit as complex as the body, possibly even more so. The localized complexity of the head necessitates its study both on its own and in conjunction with the body. This class will focus on studying the human head by itself and without the body and will consist of 5 minute, 3 minute, and 2 minute figure poses at different times throughout the term.

STREAMING CLASS: Bridgman’s Anatomy

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In Bridgman’s Anatomy, you will learn how to study the works of George Bridgman, using the book George Bridgman’s Complete Guide to Drawing from Life.  You will look at converting Bridgman’s scratchy, chaotic drawings into clean tonal interpretations, focusing on basic forms and shapes, as well as basic anatomical origins and insertions. You will then use photos of bodybuilders to extrapolate the Bridgman information, while also looking at the works of Frank Frazetta to see how to use Bridgman’s concepts in an illustration. Simply put, this is anatomy for artists, not for surgeons! To get the most out of the course, pick up the Bridgman book. We will provide online resources for you to go to for Frazetta’s works and photos of body builders.

STREAMING CLASS: Gouache Masterstudies: Landscape

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this class we will explore many different artists, from old masters to contemporary ones. Each week we will explore how each of these master painters uses value, shape, and color to compose their images. Doing gouache thumbnails in 1-2hr increments will help us understand the general foundation into what makes their work so compelling. The focus will be on establishing mood, lighting, and textures through short-hand indications. If you’ve never worked in gouache that is OK. There will be frequent instructor demonstrations.
