JUNIOR LIFEGUARDS The Encinitas Junior Lifeguard Program is an ocean safety and educational youth program for boys and girls ages nine through seventeen.

By combining education with recreation, participants learn about the ocean environment, gain professional lifesaving skills, and enjoy swimming, surfing, body boarding, bodysurfing, snorkeling, and competitions. Our goal is to educate young people in ocean and beach safety while building self-confidence and appreciation for the environment. FLICKR: https://www.flickr.com/photos/encinitasjg/albums

The City of Encinitas is pleased to announce that Junior Lifeguard program registration will begin on April 28, 2021 at 6am for Encinitas residents and non-residents.

The program will follow the most current County of San Diego COVID-19 guidelines. These guidelines are designed to help ensure safety and to minimize exposures to participants and staff and will be provided to participants before the start of the session. COVID-19 prescreening before attending camp is strongly encouraged. This years’ registration will be taken by age groups to ensure appropriate level and cohort groups.

The City’s Marine Safety Division values the Junior Lifeguard Program and all of its participants, as the program is the City’s primary means of providing ocean and beach safety education, drowning prevention, and basic first aid skills to many local children.

City Updates 03/17/2021

To all returning parents and Junior Lifeguards,

Rebounding from the 2020 COVID-19 youth program cancellations throughout California, we are looking forward to seeing positive changes in 2021 as camps are allowed to reopen with conditions per San Diego County Health Department.

The City of Encinitas Marine Safety Division is continually evaluating County COVID-19 guidelines for day camps. These guidelines are designed to help ensure safety and to minimize exposures to participants and staff. Currently, guidelines dictate that there be no more than 12 participants per group. Additionally, groups must be spaced a minimum of 6 feet apart. Space is extremely limited at Moonlight Beach. Therefore, we would be forced to drastically limit the number of participants in the program.

Our hope is to see the guidelines become less restrictive in the coming weeks and months. Please be patient and understand that the Encinitas Lifeguards are exploring all possibilities as we are eager to run the program. Our Department greatly values the Junior Lifeguard program and all the participants as it is our primary means of providing ocean and beach safety education, drowning prevention, and basic first aid skills to many of our local children.

More information will be available on the Junior Guard website as it becomes available. To subscribe to alerts, please visit https://encinitasca.gov/Home/City-Updates enter your email and select Junior Lifeguard Program Updates.
