As the school year winds down, the work on the farm ramps up. From the greenhouse to the fields, there is evidence of the abundance that will be available on school salad bars and for educational programming when students return for the 26-27 school year. What’s in your lunch?🥬🍉🥕🍊🍅🎃🥒

All visiting EUSD 2nd graders develop a deep understanding of pollination and its integral connection to the sustainability of our food sources. Students observe the structure of flowers, tour the farm, plant seeds, and learn about the many different pollinators. Students also discover that pollinator numbers are declining, the contributing factors, and potential impacts. No chocolate without pollinators? No strawberries? Yikes! 2nd graders know why pollination matters - and how humans can help!

Got natives? Third graders explored Farm Lab’s expansive native gardens when they attended their Native DREAMS Campus learning experience at Farm Lab. Students learned to identify native plants on site and discover the numerous insects, pollinators, and animals that need them to survive. Students also learned that Farm Lab was a barren, dirt lot only eleven years ago, and had the opportunity to see, first hand, the value and impact of ecosystem restoration. To take action, third graders collaboratively designed scaled, native gardens that can build habitat and restore biodiversity. These designs could be planted at school, home, or in the community. Bonus? They make seed balls to ‘spread’ their knowledge. 🙂
