Here is something I wrote several years ago to express how hard it can be to parent a kid with differences.

Some people think girls are harder to raise than boys, or vice versa. But, really, unless your kid has a diagnosis, like ADHD, Autism, Cancer, Bi-Polar Lukemia, etc., you don't know hard. Until you've had a professional fracture your life with the words "Your child has (Fill in the blank with something incurable)." You don't know hard. Until you've had strangers advise you to spank/counsel/drug/commit/administer a special diet/hospitalize/treat/pray for your child, you don't know hard. Hard is wrapping your head around the idea that your child may never overcome the battle facing them, may never live independently, may never have a life that looks anything close to normal, or may not even live at all. That's hard. And, while you, a parent of a special needs kid, are laying your life down to make some kind of way for that child, criticism from all kinds of sources pours in to reinforce that lie you can't quite shake, that evil thought that is never louder than in moments of utter exhaustion, that thought that somehow you have failed this kid. Even when you know that there is not one ounce inside of you left to do more, self doubt whispers that you've blown it. All the while, subtle or not so subtle judgmental looks from folks who you thought you could trust, who should know better, those looks scream the message that you've botched this whole thing. Strangers, associates, "friends" offer p**s poor advice about how to mend what is "unmendable." That is what hard is. And, today has been a very hard day.
