Science Storytime is BACK and this month’s theme is water! 🧊

Take a dive into learning at our September Science Storytime on Tuesday, September 15, from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. at the Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center (PAROC)!💧

Designed for children ages 7 and under, this fun-filled program welcomes the whole family. Young scientists will explore the fascinating water cycle through stories, hands-on activities, and interactive learning experiences that bring science to life. We can’t wait to explore the wonders of water with you! 🌊🐟

Max of 10 children, caregivers must attend. Please note that some activities may be hands-on and messy, so dress accordingly for an interactive learning adventure. Come prepared to play and learn with your child! Registration is required by emailing [email protected].

After reading a story, we played a pollinator relay game, looked for insects outside, and created an insect-themed craft. So much fun!🌟

🪶Beginning promptly at 10am, Bob Gress, world-renowned naturalist and wildlife photographer will share his presentation, “A Changing World for Kansas Birds”. This presentation will also be virtually available at esuparoc.com🎤
🪶At 11am, following the presentation, enjoy painting and decorating birdhouses for native birds.🐥
🪶Also at 11am, join in on a birdwatching hike and help collect native bird data for ESU!📈

It’s fall Monarch migration!🧡

Every fall, monarch butterflies follow several different migratory pathways from northern states and Canada down to south-central Mexico. Although the journey from north to south is completed by a single butterfly, there are many other generations involved in this migratory phenomenon! The butterflies you see flying around today have never even been to Mexico. Their parents and grandparents haven’t either! Following each winter, the journey from south to the northern U.S. takes several generations, with adults stopping and laying eggs along the way. These early generation adults do not live long. However, the fall 4th and 5th generation monarchs live several months, committing their whole lives to making it to Mexico and overwintering so that they can lay eggs in the spring.🐛
None of this process could happen without the help of native milkweed! Monarchs and milkweed have a very unique symbiotic relationship. Monarchs can only lay their eggs on milkweed as the caterpillars can exclusively consume milkweed leaves. These leaves contain latex full of bitter chemical defenses. As the caterpillars consume the latex, they store the toxins and become poisonous themselves. As adult butterflies, they retain the toxins and predators avoid eating them. The milkweed benefits from this relationship as it needs pollinators to help it reproduce!🌱

Feathered Friends of the Prairie is almost here!🎉

PAROC and the Grassland Heritage Foundation invite you to join us on September 19th from 10am-12pm to learn about Kansas birds!🦆

From 10am-11am, Bob Gress, world-renowned naturalist and wildlife photographer, will be sharing with guests how environmental changes in Kansas have impacted native birds, specifically grassland birds. A YouTube livestream of this presentation will also be available at esuparoc.com

Following the presentation, guests may enjoy birdhouse decorating or participate in a guided bird count through Campus Prairie and Campus Woods with ornithologists Dr. William Jensen, Dr. Alexis Powell, and Sarah Beismeier.🥾🪶

Midwest Monarch Fest at Botanica was so much fun!🦋🌸
The STEM Outreach team traveled to Wichita on Saturday to share about monarch butterflies!
Monarch migration is an amazing phenomenon and it is happening right now!
Guests were able to hear about PAROC’s prairie restoration, gather STEM Outreach resources, and make a butterfly craft!🎨

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Vamos a Pescar Chalk Art Competition!🎨
We had a great turnout with 17 total artists! The participants were challenged with drawing fish-related chalk scenes. We were impressed by everyone’s creativity!🐟

The PAROC team will determine the winners for the Best Overall and Young Artist Award categories.
