Although I haven't been posting here regularly, I don't plan on my regular classes at Portland Rock Gym] to go away!

You will continue not to see much of me on social media because I am making space for school.

This photo is from Burning Man 2022.

Extreme and unusual environments can be catalysts for learning about ourselves, and Burning Man exemplifies this.

For me, for example, I learned more about how I respond to unique situations and environmental conditions. I experimented with my limits, finding balance between self care and my usual desire to do all the things. Because there was no baseline "normal" to be confined to, I felt encouraged to try on new aspects of my persona.

Burning Man is a playground in which, maybe, we can unlock aspects of ourselves that we don't get a chance to discover or express in regular society. It expands the horizons of what's possible to experience and achieve as individuals, as communities, and in our world.

While Burning Man can be an eye opening experience, we don't need to build a city in the desert to expand and challenge our concept of Self.

Simply sitting, breathing, and noticing what comes up with a sense of curiosity is a beautiful way to observe the fleeting nature of what in us changes, and what in us remains steady.

In our yoga practice, we peer into who we are underneath the layers of societal conditioning. In this process, our preconceived ideas of who we are get challenged and we discover more about our True Self.

Burning Man is absolutely a peak experience in self discovery and expression. And yet, so is the simple practice of breathing, being, and noticing.

Express yourself through breath and movement by practicing with me at Portland Rock Gym] on Mondays at 6pm, Tuesdays at 4:30pm, and Fridays at 12:15pm.

Class is included with your membership or day pass to the gym. Check out their website to sign up. ✨️

Why I LOVE blocks!!!

I used to avoid using blocks. I thought that not using props made me a more "advanced" yoga practitioner (pffft).

In reality, the longer I've practiced yoga asana, the MORE I've incorporated blocks. They are incredible tools to make shapes feel more aligned, supportive and expansive, AND add additional challenge.

Recently I've been experimenting with bringing the blocks up with me in standing shapes by holding blocks in my hands as I move through a standing sequence. After practicing yoga for 15 years, lifting the arms starts do less and less for me physically. But bringing a block with me adds a little more weight for strengthening, and feels creative and adds more of a mental challenge. I've been incorporating this in my classes too!

Reasons I love blocks:

● Bring the ground up to me when it feels far away.
● Create more distance between my hands and the ground when weight bearing, which can add ease to shapes like lizard.
● Adding extra challenge. Have you ever tried squeezing a block between your hands and lifting them overhead? It's not easy!
● Support and stability in balancing shapes.
● Increase sensation in some shapes.
● Increased support in restorative shapes to help them feel more relaxing.
● Feedback to see if my pelvis is level when doing shapes on hands and knees or even bridge

Teaching and practicing yoga outside is one of my favorite things!
..except when the wind blows the easy up away. 😬

This was taken at the beginning of class, before the wind picked up and interrupted savasana.

Luckily, everyone was OK!

In yoga and in life, we can try all we want to plan and prepare for all possible outcomes. But the reality is that we won't always get the outcome we want and some things will be unforseen or out of our control.

Yoga prepares us for these moments through practicing nervous system regulation and being fully present with our current experience. So when unexpected chaos occurs - such as a big life change or a potentially stressful event like the easy up blowing away - we can stay more clear-headed, calm and connected with ourselves than we might have otherwise when facing such moments.

I'm grateful for the opportunities I've been given to use my yoga practice to learn lessons about myself and life!

Had a great post-class climb after wrapping up our 4-week hips series today! All that hip work really came in handy on the fun yellow V4 everyone's been projecting at .

I left students this week with a challenge to take their yoga practice to the wall. Give it a try:

1. On your warm up, set an intention to breathe smoothly and steadily through the entire climb.
2. If that feels easy, practice breathing on something at the upper edge of your comfort zone. Each time you rest and before a challenging sequence, check in and notice if you've been holding your breath. Let each pause be a reminder to come back to the breath. Notice how it feels to breathe through the crux!

Join me every Tuesday at 4:30, Wednesday at 3, and Friday at 12:15 for Yoga for Climbers.

Next week we begin our shoulder series. More on that to come 🀫

I've been getting some questions about my schedule so here it is: Starting Tues, Jan 18th you can attend my Yoga for Climbers classes at Portland Rock Gym]! πŸ§—πŸ»

Yoga and climbing truly go hand in hand. We will practice mindful movement to counter repetitive motions climbers do on the wall and build flexible strength in the places climbers need it most. (By the way, pro climber Adam Ondra has said that having flexible hips is his greatest strength.) πŸƒ

We will practice yoga-based energetic and philosophical skills climbers need to improve physical performance and head game and send projects - skills like breathwork, balance, focus, presence and flow...🌬
..All the while, with an attitude of playfulness, curiosity about our inner experience and honoring our bodies and minds where we are at. πŸ€ΈπŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

Although classes are designed with climbers in mind, all are welcome! You don't need to be a climber to enjoy the plethora of physical, mental, emotional, and (dare I say) spiritual rewards of consistent yoga practice. 🌼

Share this with a friend and join me weekly starting Tuesday, January 18th! Class is free with your Portland Rock Gym] membership or day pass. 😊

Home in PHX for the holidays and climbing at Phoenix Rock Gym with my brother! We practiced breathing on the wall because it's easy to forget sometimes when you're working on a difficult problem.

Did you know...

Breathing smoothly through physical and mental challenges helps us to stay relaxed, focused and clear-headed so that we can succeed at whatever we are doing with skill and ease. Conscious, steady breathing is a skill in itself that we can practice and improve on over time. Coming back to the breath is a central component in all of my classes, as I consider it to be one of the most important aspects of a yoga practice.

P.S. Stay tuned in January for some news regarding my class schedule in Portland in 2022! πŸŽ‰

This is going to be juicy! Flow & Restore is the perfect blend of yin and yang. We begin with a warming flow to cultivate strength, flexibility, and mindful awareness, eventually easing into supported restorative shapes for total relaxation and rejuvenation.

Join me at tomorrow (Wed Dec 1) at 12pm. Class is only 60 minutes, so you can make it a part of your lunch break.

(P.S. Join me for a climb after class?)
