Founded in 1964 in Ely, MN by Bob Pieh, VOBS has a long tradition of experiential education, outdoor adventure and value based leadership. We now operate our wilderness basecamp, Homeplace, as well as an urban center in the Twin Cities.

Our little lady Birdie is up for adoption, and she says you don’t need to see someone to know they have a good heart! Birdie lost her vision, and later eyes, to hereditary glaucoma but would never let it hold her back. At first shy around newcomers, Birdie warms up quickly and stays forever loyal. She would love for someone to take her on long adventuring walks and then settle in for a couch snuggle at the end of the day. In September we had the pleasure of welcoming our biggest partner by number of crews to date, Principia! Six crews of students departed from the Twin Cities to paddle the St. Croix riverway AND the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. We couldn't be more proud of our students and staff for their enormous effort in making these transformative experiences all happen -- and having fun while doing it!

"Before going on this trip I never really thought that I could do anything like this. I realized on this trip that I can do hard things," said student Leia. "I learned that I am capable and all I have to do is believe. I will never tell myself I can't do something, because this trip has taught me I CAN."

Emma had a similar outlook! "This week was a transformative experience in almost every way possible. I learned so much about myself, the world, and many different skills, and the people around me."
