Connecting Nevada Producers, Researchers and Agricultural Partners

Earlier this month, University of Nevada, Reno Extension brought Nevada producers, researchers and agricultural partners together for a day-long field tour.

On September 2, our Extension Agriculture Educator, Dr. Andrew Waaswa, coordinated visits to Peri & Sons Farms in Yerington and Hillside Dairy, Frey Ranch and a local alfalfa operation in Fallon. Dr. Cho of NanoGraphene Fertilizer’s South Korea team learned about Nevada’s diverse production systems and discussed opportunities for future field-based evaluation.

New Mexico State University researchers working on the Resilient Agriculture, Water, and Community Systems project also collected soil samples from annual and perennial cropping systems to support research on soil health and water conservation in the Truckee-Carson watershed.

“Extension connects producers, researchers and agricultural partners around practical needs,” Waaswa said. “These visits supported field research while ensuring that Nevada producers’ experiences inform future collaboration.”

Extension participated in the 2026 Fallon Cantaloupe Festival & Country Fair Agriculture Experience.

"A 2024 Extension study projects that this single lithium mining project will generate more than $1 billion per year in investment during its construction phase alone. Over the 40-year life of the project, average annual economic impacts during operations are projected to exceed $2.1 billion in statewide investment, alongside more than $148 million in personal income and more than 1,600 direct and indirect jobs annually. The project is also estimated to deliver more than $28 million in local and county taxes and more than $51 million in state taxes each year."

Nevada workforce partnerships and federal mining grants are securing America's domestic lithium supply chain and economic future.

What an incredible evening celebrating and connecting local producers, food business owners, and regional partners at our Clark County Extension office for our Southern Nevada Farm to Market Mixer.

This event brought together growers, emerging entrepreneurs, distributors, and supply chain specialists from across the state to build stronger connections within Nevada's local food economy. Attendees participated in speed networking, sampled local products, and explored new opportunities to scale regional agricultural operations.

Events like this highlight the resilience of our agricultural community and the importance of creating direct links across our food system. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their work, and contributed to such a productive evening of networking and collaboration. Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for an Extension County Coordinator with excellent management and interpersonal skills. This position's home base can be either Ely or Eureka, NV, depending on the successful candidate. It is expected that the County Coordinator will split their time between the two counties evenly. The position reports to the Extension Northern Area Director.
The primary role of the Extension County Coordinator is to work with community members and staff to identify beneficial community-based education and bring in statewide programs for impactful programming in agriculture, children, youth and families, horticulture, community development, natural resources, and health and nutrition in assigned counties. The incumbent will build positive, strong relations with the county commissions and community agencies. Through entrepreneurial leadership, program areas of need will be addressed through collaborations with experts statewide. One role of the position is managing the offices in assigned counties. The position will supervise some office staff to ensure programming addresses community needs. This position requires working effectively with diverse cultural and community interests and developing and maintaining solid working relationships. A joy of Extension work is revitalizing communities and improving individuals’ lives in Nevada.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and four (4) years of related professional work experience, OR

Master’s Degree and two (2) years of related professional work experience

Related Experience: Community education programming and office management or a related field
This position requires candidates to complete a fingerprinting/background check.

Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with knowledge of community education and management processes; skills in leadership, fiscal management, and communication with the public, faculty & staff; and the ability to work with diverse audiences, make oral and written presentations, and provide social media interactions are encouraged to apply.

This position's budgeted salary is $72,150.
