Summer courses at WFS 2021 are happening! And the Station is now a little more sustainable with the long needed solar power. Only a dream ten years ago when it was first talked about, but now it's reality thanks to our friends of the Field Station and Coe College. This will take a lot of worry out of food storage and tap water when the generators go down.

Session one begins next Saturday! Have a great adventure!

Well, this is a first summer that the Wilderness Field Station will have no students since it Reopened in 1977 after moving out of the BWCAW. COVID-19 and social distancing is the cause. Once (or twice with the rebuilding) is not much over the last 57 years. The students who planned to attend this year but can't, I am sorry for you, but the Station and it's classes will be there again next summer if we can control this virus .
Hope everyone is being safe and practicing Social Distancing so the station can once again be a vital place to learn about and through the Wilderness.
We will miss you this summer.

Last post for a while. I'll be heading north tomorrow hopefully. Weather today is the same as in Cedar Rapids 85 for the high, 83 right now and a low of 59. but tomorrow is different: Rain chance 30% at 10am (I'll still be in CR) a high of 67 with low going down to 43. Looks like it will stay those temps until Saturday when the students arrive for the start of WFS summer session 1.

We'll have to see what the water temps are, but I bet we can swim.

Have a good summer you all. I'll try to post a couple of times over the summer!

Ely's weather was 65 degrees today with a low tonight of 40. Oh oh, tomorrow night will be down to 34 degrees! Students, pack long underwear and fleece. Well maybe not, by this time next week the high will be 78, low will be 53. That's more like it.

Dr. Harlo Hadow (Heins-Johnson Professor of Biology) is retiring from Coe College (but not the Field Station Yet!)

Happy March 1st! Well the summer program is just around the corner. 105 days until the beginning of the first Session. This years line up for courses: June 15-July 13 is Aquatic Ecology, Environmental Justice Race, Class, Power, and Sustainability, & Conservation in the wild. Second session July 13- Aug 10 brings Boreal Mammology, Writing Wilderness, Animal Behavior, and Wilderness Sustainability.

Sounds like an interesting line up!
