I enjoyed my visit and walk-thru of Hinds Career Center in Elwood this afternoon with fellow Senator, Mike Gaskill. Hinds Career Center serves students from Grant County who attend Madison-Grant High School as well as many other high schools in Senator Gaskill's district. I was amazed at how many programs they offer that quite literally allow graduates to start high paying jobs immediately after graduation.
It is imperative that Hinds and other career centers receive the necessary funding to help build up our skilled workforce.
Thank you CTE Director, Laura Groover, for the tour and important discussion about providing our youth with the absolute best career training programs.

We had a couple of special guests stop by Hinds this afternoon! Senator Mike Gaskill and Senator Nick McKinley toured our programs and joined us for a great discussion about CTE and the opportunities it creates for students.

They even participated in an impromptu Q&A with our Criminal Justice students!

Thank you, Senators Gaskill and McKinley, for taking the time to visit, ask questions and see firsthand what our students are learning and accomplishing at Hinds!

Meet the Hinds Leadership Team:
Laura Groover, Director, and Tara Norris, Assistant Director
—two of the people helping lead Hinds Career Center.

💙 Laura has been at Hinds for 20 years and says the students have taught her to “stand up for what I believe is right (even when it isn’t easy) because the decisions we make today affect their futures.” Her three words for Hinds? Opportunity. Belonging. Future.

🧡 Tara has been at Hinds for 9 years and loves seeing students get excited about what they’ve made, learned and accomplished. More than anything, she hopes students know: “I am on their side…I am in their corner cheering them on.”

And the important stuff…

🎶 Entrance Music:
Laura — Don’t Stop Me Now {Queen}
Tara — I’m Still Standing {Elton John}

🏆 Unofficial titles:
Laura — Chief Idea Generator
Tara — Mrs. Everywhere

☕ Both run on coffee.
🍬 Laura runs on Nerds Gummy Clusters.
🍕 Tara runs on pizza.

Different personalities. Different strengths. One shared goal: making Hinds the best place it can be for our students.

Learning it is one thing.
Teaching it is the next level.

Our second-year Collision Repair students stepped into leadership roles, sharing their skills and guiding first-year students through hands-on practice. That’s how experience—and confidence—are built at Hinds!

Congratulations to our Fire & Rescue / EMS instructor!!

“Mrs. Groover! Come look at this!”

When a student yells that at me from down the hall, obviously I’m going to go see what’s happening. 😂

Turns out, one of our 2nd-year Welding Technology students just wanted to show off what she’d been working on.

And honestly…as she should.

From a piece of metal to a finished project she’s clearly pretty proud of — THIS is what hands-on learning looks like at Hinds.

Keep yelling for me in the hallway when you make cool stuff.
I’ll come look every time. 🧡💙
