People don't need leaders who fix everything. They need leaders who show up before everything falls apart. One of the biggest misconceptions about leadership is that your value comes from solving every problem. It doesn't.

The leaders who build the strongest schools aren't the ones constantly putting out fires. They're the ones who create relationships (with every interaction), trust (with every follow-up), and systems (with the people ACTUALLY doing the work) that prevent many of those fires from starting in the first place.

What does that look like?

➡️ CHECK IN BEFORE THERE'S A PROBLEM
Don't wait for someone to ask for help. A five-minute conversation in the hallway, a quick classroom visit, or a simple "How are you doing?" builds trust long before it's needed.

➡️ NOTICE THE SMALL CHANGES
Pay attention when someone's energy shifts, communication changes, or confidence fades. Addressing small concerns early often prevents much bigger challenges later.

➡️ MAKE SUPPORT NORMAL
Create a culture where asking for help isn't viewed as a weakness. Regular coaching conversations, collaborative problem-solving, and consistent feedback make support part of the everyday experience, not just something that happens during a crisis.

School leadership isn't measured by how many problems you solve. It's measured by how many people feel supported before those problems become overwhelming.

What's one way you intentionally show up for your staff before they need to ask?

This is a good read! It reminds me of my Sparta days when we were a Spotlight school.
Strong schools don’t happen by accident. They are built with intention, consistency, and a shared commitment to students.

Some of the key characteristics we see in successful schools:

• Clear vision and focused leadership everyone knows the “why” behind the work
• High expectations for all students with support to match
• Strong, trusting relationships between staff, students, and families
• Data-informed decisions not driven by trends, but by what actually works
• Collaborative staff culture teachers learning from and supporting each other
• Consistency in systems and practices
• A focus on the whole child — academic, social, and emotional growth

Is your district aligned, intentional, and always learning?

At Herek Educational Consulting, we partner with schools to strengthen these exact practices and build sustainable systems that last.

School leaders, this matters.

A recent update from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction highlights a reality many of us are already feeling: nearly half of educators are leaving the classroom within their first 8 years. Burnout, lack of compensation, and limited support are taking a real toll.

But we also know what helps educators stay—feeling valued, supported, connected, and given opportunities to grow.

At Herek Educational Consulting, we are passionate about partnering with schools and districts to turn that knowledge into action. Whether it’s strengthening mentoring systems, building leadership capacity, or creating meaningful professional learning experiences, we are here to support educators—especially those in their early years—so they not only stay, but thrive.

Retention doesn’t happen by chance. It happens through intentional systems, strong relationships, and a commitment to investing in people.

If your district is looking to better support and retain educators, we would love to connect and be part of the solution.
