Attendance matters to your teen's future

For a strong start this year, make it clear that you expect your teen to attend and participate in every class. Your teen may think cutting class is just a way to get out of some work. Explain that cutting class can also cut your teen off from future opportunities. Unexcused absences may be included on students' permanent records, for upper-level programs, colleges, and prospective employers to see.

You want your teen to start this school year off on the right foot. So, make it clear that you expect your student to attend and participate in each class.

FYI

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Due to the recent storm, our campus is currently experiencing electrical issues affecting lights and air conditioning in select buildings. Additionally, our main internet and phone lines are temporarily down.

Please be assured that all students are safe and comfortable. We have relocated classes from the impacted areas to fully powered, air-conditioned spaces on campus.

To ensure safety and smooth operations, we will be operating on a modified schedule today. (The schedule will be in the comments)

Important Logistics for Today:

Transportation: Standard bus transportation will run for all bus riders.

CAVIT: CAVIT programs will remain on their regular schedule.

Teens often clam up when you wish they would talk. To open up communication with your teen, look for ways to build bridges between your lives. Try these suggestions: Over ice cream, compare your middle or high school experiences. Settle in together to eat popcorn and watch some TV shows you watched as a teen. Or share a laugh looking over your old high school photos.

You choose the values you instill in your teen. Here are four to consider that will benefit your teen in school and life: 1. Generosity. Making another person's life better improves your teen's life, too. 2. Integrity. Your teen will be someone who can be counted on. 3. Forgiveness. Teach your teen that holding on to anger damages relationships and health. 4. Respect. Teach respect for self and for others, and your teen will win the respect of classmates, teachers and more.

Every family has its own values. You choose the values you instill in your teen. However, there are a few values that give teens a better chance of growing up with self-respect and of winning respect from others—in school, in the workplace, and in life.
