In 2021, Mallory Burke ’22 won Elmhurst’s Bluejay Tank Pitch Competition after presenting GirlGrillz, a professional grill and smoker cleaning service. Today, she runs that company and cleans 100-150 grills per season alongside her sister, Kayley Burke ’23.

As students, both were members of the Women's Track & Field team. Mallory majored in biology and psychology, Kayley in nursing. Currently, Mallory teaches third grade in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and Kayley works as a traveling nurse. Working for GrillGirlz is a great fit with their schedules.

The Athletic Department recently hired GrillGirlz to clean its grill before the upcoming football season; Elmhurst U. became the company’s first commercial client. “It's a special, full-circle moment,” Mallory says. “The university that helped shape me as a student and athlete is now supporting me as a business owner.” Their No. 1 grill maintenance tip? Don’t forget to clean the grease trap. Too often, GrillGirlz doesn’t get called until after a grease fire ruins a cookout. The newly cleaned Athletics grill will be used on Sept. 5, during the Bluejay football team’s first home game.
