What happens when we make room for creativity in STEM learning?

A 2025 meta-analysis examining 29 studies found that STE(A)M education had a large positive effect on students' creativity, with an overall effect size of 1.11.

For us, that's an important reminder of why the A in STEAM matters. 🎨

Art can bring design, creativity, expression, and imagination into the learning process. It gives students opportunities to approach challenges from different perspectives and explore more than one possible solution.

In a hands-on STEAM experience, students might build something that works—but they can also make decisions about how it looks, how it communicates an idea, how it solves a problem, and what they want to create next.

At TinkRworks, we believe students should have opportunities to build, code, experiment, design, and create. Education shouldn't only prepare students to find the right answers, it should help them develop the creativity to imagine new possibilities.

LaGrange Highlands School District 106 saw that enthusiasm firsthand when all 75 available spots in its TinkRworks STEAM courses filled quickly.

Students put their learning into action.

💻 Fifth graders tackled TinkRbot coding challenges.
🚁 Eighth graders constructed and flew drones.
🔧 Students worked through challenges while developing resilience, technical skills, and confidence.

Hands-on STEAM learning gives students opportunities to experiment, test ideas, troubleshoot problems, and try again. These experiences encourage active learning and help students practice skills they can carry into future challenges.
