As part of Elmhurst Academy's Special Rights Learning Series, the students had an opportunity to participate in a zoom visit with Special Olympians Erin Compton and Becky Cavanagh. Erin and Becky introduced themselves and told the students they are both Sophomores in High School and compete in gymnastics routines at the Special Olympics and have won medals for their competitions. The students were able to see what an Olympic Medal looks like. Erin and Becky lead the students in ribbon style gymnastic routines and danced where they learned how to do the
snakes, spirals, figure 8's. The Lakeview students had the opportunity to use the same ribbons as Erin and Becky.

October is Meet the Blind Month and as part of the Special Rights Learning Series, Elmhurst Academy students were honored to have Gillian Ward and Coach Mike Svac from the Chicago Blackhawks Blind Hockey. Gillian is a college student at Loyola University, studying Communications / Marketing and Public Relations and a hockey player. Gillian talked about her vision loss and introduced the students to her dog, Song. Gillian and Coach Mike talked with the students about blind hockey and the students were able to experiment with a blind hockey puck that is bigger, hollow and contains ball bearings that rattles and makes sound so the players rely on their hearing when they are playing. Prior to their visit, Elmhurst Academy's Foreign Language Teacher, Mrs. Lardin introduced the students to the Braille Alphabet and worked with the students on writing their names in Braille. A special thank you to Gillian, Coach Mike and Mrs. Lardin for this wonderful experience.

As we have encountered much learning through investigations into different cultures throughout the school year, Elmhurst Academy continues to embark on our Special Rights Learning Series to create an understanding of similarities and differences to people with special rights. Students in the Prairie, Woodlands and Lakeview Classrooms will have special guests visiting their classrooms to learn about people with varying abilities. October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and we were honored to have a zoom visit with Karen and Kelly Neville. Kelly has Down Syndrome and her own jewelry line that she creates and sells. Mrs. Neville and Kelly talked with the students about how alike and different we all are. We learned that Halloween is Kelly's favorite holiday and that she likes mushrooms on her pizza. Thank you to Mrs. Neville and Kelly for a wonderful virtual visit!

Elmhurst Academy faculty and students celebrated their annual 10 days of Peace that began on Saturday, September 11th, and concluded on Tuesday, September 21st, the International Day of Peace.
During these days of Peace, students participated in various peace activities and acts of kindness. Students learned about the meaning of Peace Cranes and participated in the peace crane exchange to spread the message of peace throughout their community. Students discussed in their classrooms what peace means to them and read various peace stories. As students are learning to work together, they also work with teachers to create social stories and tools for peaceful conflict resolutions. Breathing exercises, yoga, and brain education were taught to the students to promote peaceful bodies. Together, classrooms and families wove kindness into the wings of a collaborative art sculpture. Each classroom then participated in a peace exchange with an act of kindness and peace representation to help bridge cultural boundaries and inspire kindness. On Tuesday, September 21th Elmhurst Academy concluded by gathering at the community peace garden and reciting a peace pledge.
Elmhurst Academy chooses to start each new school year off with 10 days of peace to help foster kindness in our school community throughout the year.

Over the last few weeks, Elmhurst Academy explorers have been experimenting with STEAM through airplane challenges, coding, Lego marble mazes and rocket ship building. They have also been learning about colors through the walking rainbow experiment and observing what happens when you combine vinegar and baking soda. On a global spectrum, they have been celebrating the opening of the Summer Olympics. Some exciting news to share: some of the sphinx moth's hatched and the students released them on the East Discovery Play Garden and Cotile! The River Classroom released their sphinx moth (named Butterfly) and the Senior Explorers released their sphinx moth (named Mystery). We anticipate the hatching of the Prairie Classroom's (named Garlic Bread) and the Woodland's Classroom (name to be determined if it's a boy or a girl). Stay tuned!

The students celebrated Eric Carle's Birthday by exploring some of his most beloved books and were inspired to create their very own artistic displays in classroom windows to celebrate the beloved, late author. During the week of June 29, each classroom celebrated International Mud Day. On this day, children and early childhood professionals all over the world celebrate nature, outdoors, and mess by getting muddy! We ended our week by celebrating America's birthday with our annual "Red, White and Blue" Bike Parade.
