OWLS Try-A-Trade

Last week, Mrs. Cole took 12 of our CTE students to the 3rd annual Construction Try-A-Trade at Satsop Business Park, hosted by the Capital STEM Alliance and Career Connect Washington.

Our students put on hard hats and safety vests, got behind the controls of heavy equipment, and talked face-to-face with professionals from 18 trade unions, including Electricians, Ironworkers, Operating Engineers, Plumbers and Pipe Fitters, Sheet Metal Workers, and more.

Days like this help students see a future they can work toward, right here in our region.

Congratulations to the OWLS who attended:
Tyler Baslington, Olivia Blackman, Bella Buck, Colton Gage-Brix, Harley Garcia, Cash King, Ryder Lake, Destiny LaRance, Micah Palmer, Joe Seymour, Dayton Triggs, and Nicholas Wulf.

Our custodial and maintenance team plays an essential role in making Mary M. Knight a safe, welcoming, and great place for students and staff every day.

We want to recognize and thank Ron Larson, Scott Dewey, and Ron Schmitz for everything they do for our OWLS. From keeping our buildings clean and our grounds and facilities functioning, to responding to the countless needs that come up each day, their work helps keep our school running.

Just as importantly, they are part of the relationships and connections that make MMK special. They know our kids, support our staff, and continually step in wherever they are needed.

Thank you, Ron, Scott, and Ron, for the pride, care, and commitment you bring to Mary M. Knight. We appreciate all you do for our students, staff, and community.

🌟 GRIT Students of the Week! 🌟

We are excited to celebrate this week’s GRIT Students at Mary M. Knight! 🦉💙

Our Owls showed GRIT by taking responsibility for their learning, pushing through challenges, supporting their classmates, stepping up as leaders, and choosing to put in the effort needed to grow. Whether it was catching up on missing work, asking for help, encouraging a teammate, or simply showing kindness when someone needed it, these students are making a difference!

👏 Congratulations to Becky, Kylie, Adam, Dylan, Madi, Rosalynn, Layla, Nicholas, Marigold, Camryn, Raegyn, Layla T., Keith, Mason, and Bryson!

We are excited to launch a new tradition at Mary M. Knight: our MMK Senior Spotlight!

Throughout the school year, we will feature one of our senior OWLS each month, giving our community the opportunity to learn more about the students who make MMK such a special place.

Our first Senior Spotlight features Bella Buck, Class of 2027, sharing about her volleyball experience, what motivates her as a senior, the importance of supporting her teammates, and the advice she would give to younger athletes.

This project is also an exciting part of the work being done through our Yearbook and Journalism class with Ms. Cole. Students are helping conduct the interviews, develop the stories, and celebrate the experiences of their fellow OWLS. A special thank you to Layla Thomas and Toni Koonrad for conducting Bella’s interview.

We look forward to sharing more of our seniors’ stories throughout the year and celebrating the people, experiences, and memories that make up the Class of 2027.

Today was a special Student Choice Lunch at MMK!

As part of our Student Choice program, Allie Finch was nominated by staff for consistently demonstrating our OWLS behaviors — Ownership, Willingness, Leadership, and Success. Her recognition came with the opportunity to choose one of her favorite meals for our school lunch menu.

Allie’s choice: Thanksgiving dinner! It was a big hit with our OWLS today.

A huge thank you to our food service team for putting together another great meal and for creating opportunities like this that make lunch fun and meaningful for our students.

And congratulations to Allie! Your hard work, positive choices, and leadership earned you this opportunity. Thank you for choosing a meal that so many of your fellow OWLS enjoyed!

📣 Calling Young Adults Ages 18–24!

Mary M. Knight is helping spread the word about an exciting opportunity for young adults in Mason, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Pacific, and Thurston counties!

Launch Your Career is a PAID 12-week work experience that connects young adults with local employers and gives them the opportunity to:

💼 Explore potential careers
💰 Get paid while gaining real-world experience
📝 Build their resume and job skills
🤝 Make connections with local employers
🚗 Access support for needs such as transportation
🎓 Potentially earn industry certifications or college credit

The program and funding are already in place — now they need young people to take advantage of it!

⏰ Enrollment needs to be completed by the end of October.

Getting started is easy! Scan the QR code on the flyer, answer eight questions, and someone from the program will reach out to help with the rest.
