we’ve been teaching sharpening for a long time.

and we’re about to teach it a little differently.

it’s called the moose hair method.

no honing guide. no obsessing over exact angles. no complicated setup.

just a simple, repeatable way to get a working edge and get back to cutting wood.

some folks aren’t going to like it.

we went looking for a skid steer under $15,000.

then we changed our mind.

the more we looked at machines, talked through what we actually needed, and thought about how a skid steer fits into the work at star hill timberworks, the more our thinking changed.

the evolution of a marking knife

we do a lot of prototyping at star hill.
this photo shows some of the marking knives we've built, modified, tested, sharpened, and used along the way. each one taught us something.

eventually, that process led us to the star hill marking knife we use today.

18° primary bevel.
20° secondary bevel.

double beveled, so it works right or left handed.

simple. sharp. built specifically for marking timber.

the red version pictured is carbon steel.

we also make it in bolt blue using CPM-3V.

sometimes the finished tool looks pretty simple.

getting there usually isn't.
