On September 1st, 1991 I purchased what was then known as Black Belt Self Defense and Fitness martial arts school after teaching for my instructor for the previous 9 1/2 years. I eventually changed the name to St. Louis Family Martial Arts Academy and began developing the curriculum that we still teach today. I’ve been fortunate over the years to train under and with some great martial artists and instructors. In the last thirty five years our school has trained many thousands of students and promoted over 500 Black Belts. We’ve even produced a number of top martial arts competitors, but none of that has ever been the focus of our school. My goals from the very beginning have always been to teach quality martial arts along with the life skills and values that can help our students achieve their goals and have future successes in their lives. Whether it’s our prep classes for four to six year olds, our children’s and family traditional martial arts programs, Chick Fight Club, our leadership team, or our partnership with the Pujols Family Foundation our goals are as simple as making a difference and having a positive impact on our students and in our community.

We cannot accomplish any of those things without the support of so many. This is a great time to say thank you to the many teenage and adult staff members our school has had over these last thirty five years. And of course, without the support of the parents and family members of our students we could never do what we do every day in class.

I turned 65 years old this summer so naturally the question comes up with students or staff once in a while. When am I retiring? I can’t answer that any other way than to say I have no plans to retire anytime soon. I still love what I do! Other than a few minor aches and pains I’m still quite healthy. While I might not be able to do some of the things as well physically as I could thirty five or forty five years ago (or even ten 😂)I still believe that what I teach and the way I teach has value. I have what is for me the best job in the world and I’m nowhere near ready to even think about giving that up. My plan is to teach for a long time yet!

So THANK YOU to everyone who has been a part of this school the last thirty five years and helped make it what it is today. It’s a special place to me and I hope it is to you too!

And Yes! This is what I looked like 35 years ago!

Last night Mr. Bussey taught the 6:50 class and helped me teach the 7:40 black belt prep class. His comment at the end of the night was what a great job our leadership team instructors had done all night. I couldn’t agree more! My response to his comment was that while we’ve always had a group of strong young leaders around who were both talented martial artists and great role models I think that right now we have without a doubt the best group of middle school and high school aged students we’ve ever had. I think that’s a great testament to the high school and college aged staff we’ve employed the last several years as well as our adult teaching staff. Their efforts have created an environment that really lets the students shine and develop into great leaders themselves.

Tonight’s black belt class will begin a six week series where we’ll spend half the class working on advanced forms and the second half of class learning all six series in the Filipino Kali empty hand series. The kali empty hand series leads into some great practical self defense techniques as well as enhancing more traditional sparring skills - and it’s a lot of fun too!

We had another great Chick Fight Club event tonight. 58 girls and women participated in a fun self defense class covering a wide variety of topics. As always it was a great time and our CFC leaders did a great job making it a fun and educational experience - and as usual there were even plenty of sweet treats at the end.

I don’t have to tell anyone how important our daily staff is to the development of our students. They’re not only very capable martial artists and instructors they’re also the best role modes and examples we could ever ask for. Tonight is Olivia and Noah’s last night as staff employees as they’re both headed off to college at the end of the week. While they’re leaving us in good hands with Andrew, Peter, and Annie we’re certainly going to miss them a lot - along with Ryah who left a little earlier this summer. The three of them have been simply awesome! Ryah is headed to Cornell college in Iowa considering a career in education and continuing her wrestling career as a collegiate athlete. Noah is off to Purdue to study engineering, and Olivia will be pursuing a career In education at Benedictine.

Please feel free to say goodbye and thank Olivia and Noah for the impact they’ve had on all of our students when you attend class tonight.
