Principal/Counselor Annual Meeting: Want a great advocacy tool with your administrator? Try the Principal/Counselor Annual Meeting! This template provides a guide for a critical conversation with your administrator that educates, informs, and creates opportunities to discuss your school counseling program. Completed each year in the fall, it’s a great way to provide a snapshot of what you plan to do with your program and have your administrator informed and on board!

Setting Goals and Collecting Data: School counselors can be a necessary piece of the puzzle when it comes to setting goals and collecting the data to examine those goals. Too often, school counselors shie away from data, but the collection of data is easy, fun and very natural. This presentation will show you how to write goals, how to collect data easily, and how to analyze that data to make relevant recommendations and observations. It helps school counselors work smarter, not harder!!

The ASCA Code of Ethics: The Ethical Code of the American School Counselor Association was updated in 2022. All 50 states were involved and had a voice at the table. This Code of Ethics guides our practice as school counselors; it is our professional responsibility to know what is included in the ethical standards, how and when to use them, and how to apply them in ethical dilemmas.

Legal and Ethical Update 2023-24: Laws change and ethical practices become more defined every year. This update will provide updates on new laws in Missouri that may affect school counselors, more information on note-taking, su***de, and parents rights. Also, the new tool from ASCA, the Su***de Information Gathering Tool, will be introduced and briefly discussed.

The ASCA Su***de Information Gathering Tool: Many school districts request/require that school counselors assess the level of suicidal intention of a student. This practice is faulty at best, tragic at its worst. School counselors have struggled with the idea of quantifying the intention of su***de. The ASCA Su***de Information Gathering Tool is a great response to this dilemma. It provides step-by-step instructions and interviewing that is needed in supporting students and families as they deal with the potential of su***de. This wonderful tool should be in every school counselor’s toolkit.

Advisory Council…It’s A Beautiful Thing: Do you have a School Counseling Advisory Council in your school? How does it function? How does it support you and guide your program? Is it really a benefit? An Advisory Council for School Counseling is one of the best advocacy tools a school counseling program could have. This presentation will walk you through the process from beginning to stories of real life outcomes from schools in Missouri that have successful Advisory Councils.

Advocating For Your School Counseling Program: How would you rate yourself as an advocate for your school counseling program? Who are your best advocates in your school and community? This presentation will focus on the who, what, how, when and why of program advocacy for school counseling programs. Our students deserve a fully implemented school counseling program that serves their needs and is delivered by certified school counselors. Advocacy is a key factor in this journey!

Presenting to Your Board of Education: Does your school board know what your program is supposed to do…and does? It’s imperative that an annual Board of Education report is given by the school counselors in your district. Board of Education members are advocates for students; it’s important that they know the components of the school counseling program and how it works in their community. This presentation will focus on what to present, how to present information (even when it’s not all positive), and how to include and inform your school board members.
