Congratulations to our 2026 Volunteer & Instructor Award recipients! We gathered under a beautiful fall sky at our annual picnic last weekend, to celebrate and recognize the outstanding efforts of these incredible individuals who embody the spirit of community and collaboration at The Clearing.

Darrel Morrison: Butternut Award
Starting with the highest of The Clearing’s volunteer honors is the Butternut Award named for the beautiful butternut tree that once grew near The Clearing’s Main Lodge. The tree defied the odds of being badly fire-damaged from the neighboring Lodge building burning to the ground in 1937. The tree’s strength allowed it to heal and thrive until 1975, when it gently fell to the ground. Those who receive the Butternut Award represent the best of what has always been The Clearing’s greatest strength—dedicated people who love this remarkable place.

Kristin Frawley, Susan Hoffmann, & James Viste: Hawthorn Award
Those who receive the Hawthorn Award emulate the venerable Hawthorn tree, a favorite of Jens Jensen’s, by faithfully giving breadth and bigness to the ongoing work of The Clearing over their years of service as volunteers.

Sandy Place: White Cedar Award
The White Cedar Award is given to those Clearing instructors who have been devoted to teaching, devoted to their students and devoted to The Clearing for many years. Just as the white cedar represents the best of The Clearing’s natural landscape, those instructors who receive the White Cedar Award represent the best of The Clearing’s human and cultural landscape.

A heartfelt thank you to each of you for your generosity and hard work. Your contributions inspire us all, and we thank you!
