Hands-on, primary grade science that uses inexpensive grow sponges from the dollar store. Young students are fascinated by the spectacular growth of these sponges. Place them in water and they are eager to see the next day how they have increased in size. This presents an opportunity not only to learn about water absorption, but to also to measure surface area as students can count the number of squares on a grid that the growing sponge occupies. Laminate the graph paper or make as many copies as you need. Use science to instill an interest in learning!

There are interesting buoyancy effects with floating and sinking oranges, lemons, and limes. Peeling the fruits sometimes gives surprising results! Really fosters critical thinking skills and an understanding of buoyancy.
