We are excited to spotlight one of our esteemed alums, Kylie Azzara! Congratulations to Kylie on earning the Abby Boehm Merit Award for Maryvale Preparatory School's Class of 2026 8th grade graduation! This award comes with a generous 4-year scholarship toward high school. The Abby Boehm '98 Merit Award Fund, named in memory of Abigail M. Boehm, is awarded to a Maryvale eighth-grade student who exemplifies the character and spirit of Abby. A young woman who maintains a humanitarian approach to the needs of others works quietly behind the scenes, does not seek praise for her efforts and demonstrates respect and kindness for peers, adults, and the Maryvale community. Abby's sister, Blair Dicriscio, has been one of Kylie's teachers at Maryvale. Kylie was also the female recipient of the SJPDS Spirit award during her graduating year at St. John's back in 2019! Kylie aspires to be a nurse someday and will use her care, compassion, and empathy to aid others in their time of need. We are so proud of Kylie and wish her continued success! Go, SJPDS Bears!

We are excited to kick off celebrating Black History Month with this spotlight of one of our esteemed alums, Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman! Congratulations to Anna Gifty on publishing her new book: The Black Agenda: Bold Solutions For a Broken System. Anna Gifty was in our first Lower School graduating class of 2007 and the first African-American Lower School student to graduate from SJPDS. Anna gifted SJPDS a copy of the book inside of which she wrote this lovely dedication: "To the school community that believed in me before I even knew to believe in myself. Thank you for teaching me to love learning."

Apart from being an SJPDS alumna, Anna Gifty is a researcher, writer, science communicator, and activist. Her work has been featured in Teen Vogue, The New York Times, Slate Magazine, NPR, Fortune, Marketplace, and The Guardian. She is the co-founder of The Sadie Collective, the only nonprofit organization addressing the lack of Black women in economics and related fields. In 2020, she became the youngest recipient of the CEDAW Women's Rights Award by the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

Anna Gifty's new book is a collection bringing together leading Black scholars and experts for a policy-oriented approach to the fight for racial justice in America. The book features Black voices across economics, education, health, climate, and technology, speaking to the question "What's next?" as it pertains to centering Black people in policy matters in our country. The book went on sale yesterday, February 1st, and is available wherever books are sold. For more information about the book, visit www.blackagendabook.com.

We are so proud of Anna Gifty and wish her much continued success! Go Bears!

Alumni edition! Congratulations to SJPDS Alums Victoria Walters and Sherise Scott who will both graduate from the same university next week! From preschool-3rd grade, they both attended SJPDS until the Walters relocated; however, their moms remained good friends. During freshman year at the University of Miami, both girls rekindled their friendship and here they are today as college seniors! On the left is Victoria who majored in Economics with a minor in Finance and Marketing, on the right is Sherise who majored in Finance with a minor in Spanish and Marketing. Many great lifelong relationships start at SJPDS. We are of Victoria and Sherise and of their wonderful friendship! Go Bears!🐻

We are so excited to spotlight one of our esteemed alums, Alex Scott! Congratulations to Alex for earning his commercial pilot license! Alex just completed his college degree in Aeronautical Science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in December 2020, including his commercial pilot license. Right now, he is getting ready to start training to become a Certified Flight Instructor at a local flight school. Since he can remember, Alex wanted to be a pilot, and everyone at St. John's wanted to help him fulfill his dream of becoming one. Read his interview below:

Q: How has your education at St. John’s influenced or helped you in your life and career?

My education at St. John's helped me with forming the building blocks of good study and work habits. The most important thing I learned at St. John's was how to work in a team on group projects. I was a part of the junior gardening program, and I remember doing fun small projects in class that focused on teamwork. An example of when teamwork plays an important role in my job is when we're flying, one pilot is talking on the radio and running through a checklist while the pilot can focus on flying the plane.

Q: What is your proudest accomplishment?
My proudest accomplishment is getting my private pilot license. This was a dream of mine since I was little, and to finally pass my check ride was a great feeling.

Q: What do you miss the most about St. John’s?
I miss all the people I've met there. They were all nice and wanted to help you grow.

Q: What does the future look like for you?
I plan to continue working hard toward my goal of becoming an airline pilot for Southwest.

We are so proud of Alex and wish him continued success in his journey!
