Seven Oaks was launched by a group of community members who aim to bring a classical school to the educational options available in the diverse communities surrounding Monroe County. Seven Oaks provides students the benefit of a content rich and academically rigorous clas

sical liberal arts education with a strong civics component. At Seven Oaks, students are challenged to excel both in academics and in moral discipline. Students learn reading, math, and science through time proven methods and learn a true account of history based in the reading of primary source documents. Furthermore, discipline, ethics, and personal responsibility are modeled and expected. Seven Oaks' aim is to develop the academic potential and personal character of each of its students, regardless of background, socio-economic status and ability, and to graduate them fully prepared to become intelligent, responsible, and active members of their community. When a real-life “giant” walks by your classroom… you invite him in for story time!

During dismissal one afternoon, Ms. Pursell’s students spotted high school student Zion, walking by on his way to soccer practice. At 6'5", Zion immediately caught their attention.

“WOW! Look at him—he’s a giant!”

Ms. Pursell couldn’t let an opportunity like that pass by. So, she invited Zion to visit the class and read Jack and the Beanstalk.

A real-life “giant” reading a story about giants? It doesn’t get much better than that.

It was a simple, joyful moment, but also one of those uniquely Seven Oaks moments we love: younger students looking up to the big kids (quite literally!), and older students taking the time to make their day a little more special.

As I watched my 8th graders participate in a survey activity completely in French, I was inspired by just how much their French skills have grown since 5th grade.

Students at Seven Oaks have a unique opportunity to begin studying a modern foreign language at a very formative age—around 10 years old. This means their potential for mastering French over the course of their studies is incredibly high.

By 8th grade, the majority of students who have been in the program since 5th grade know hundreds of vocabulary words. They can participate in conversations that go beyond the basics, retell stories in French through writing and speaking, understand native speakers using simple vocabulary at a slower pace, and read basic stories with the skills to decode unfamiliar words and understand the larger message.

But perhaps just as important as what they have learned is how they have learned to approach something new.

Along the way, most students have cultivated patience and discovered the joy that comes from learning and understanding a new language.

Watching them communicate with one another in French was a wonderful reminder of how far they have come and how, given the right tools, time, and conditions, truly anyone can learn a new language.

“One of my favorite parts of the day is when we get to read good stories together.” - Miss Cool

Literature is the last subject of our day. You can imagine how antsy and tired second graders can be after nearly seven hours at school, knowing they’re only half an hour away from going home. Expecting them to sit still at 2:45 can sometimes seem like an impossible task.

And yet, without fail, every student quiets down and follows along attentively as soon as we begin reading.

We have the privilege of beginning our year with Charlotte’s Web, and the students have already befriended the characters on the farm. We laugh at Wilbur’s antics and ache with him for the want of a friend. We giggle at the silliness of the goose and wonder at Charlotte’s grace and cunning.

I am always amazed by the love children have for good stories. When we begin reading, the desire to step back into the world of Charlotte and Wilbur seems to trump everything else.

There is no tired day or hard afternoon that cannot be improved and beautified by spending a few minutes reading good stories together.

When a local business chooses to support Seven Oaks, the impact reaches far beyond a banner, a program, or a business name.

It reaches students.

Right now, there are two ways local businesses can come alongside our students through our Athletics and Theater Sponsorship Programs. These partnerships help create opportunities for students to step onto the court, take the stage, work alongside their teammates and castmates, discover new strengths, and experience the satisfaction that comes from working toward something together.

In return, we’re proud to recognize the businesses that choose to invest in the young people of our community.

KITCHEN UPDATE!

Work on the kitchen is well underway! After years of dreaming, planning, and generosity, we can finally walk through the space and see it take shape.

There’s a lot to celebrate!

When we started this project, we weren’t sure we’d reach Phase 2 — the money needed to begin cooking meals as frequently as once a week. But funding has taken us well into Phase 3 — the infrastructure that would allow us to scale up to daily hot lunches.

Why such an outpouring of support?

Because this project has never just been about building a kitchen. It’s about students gathering around freshly prepared meals. It’s about giving families greater access to a school food program. It’s about future opportunities for students to learn about nutrition, cooking, and service. And it’s about creating another space where we can care for our students and strengthen the Seven Oaks community.

The only question now is how far we’ll go and how soon.

Our current funding guarantees we’re going to be able to offer hot lunches this spring — despite seeing our share of construction surprises (like discovering some roof damage that will require fabrication of a couple large structural beams so that we can safely support our new 1,200 lb vent hoods).

The question is whether we can close the last $75k gap and finish Phase 3.

So here we are: We have a window of opportunity. If we can raise the remaining $75k needed for Phase 3, we can go ahead and do the work now while the kitchen is still a construction zone. That would be much better than starting food service and then having to pack everything up so that we can bust out a wall for a new walk-in cooler.

That’s where we’re at. No matter what, we’re going to be ready to begin making meals this spring. But we’d love to go ahead and complete Phase 3.

Whether it’s $25, $100, $1,000, or a transformational gift, every donation moves us one step closer to fully completing the kitchen and serving that first meal.

This year, we added American Sign Language as a new high school elective, taught by Mrs. Muncie.

Recently, her students completed their first unit quiz with a little time to spare. Given the chance to head outside and celebrate, the class unanimously agreed on their “prize”: learning the signs for their favorite animals NOW instead of waiting for that unit later in the semester.

So, they spent the next 15 minutes sitting in the sunshine, learning the signs for cows, sharks, mosquitoes, and on and on. Just when Mrs. Muncie thought they had covered them all, someone thought of another!

Sometimes, joy in learning looks exactly like this...a sunny afternoon, a curious group of students, and no one quite ready to stop learning.

There is something special about watching students create something with their own hands.

This year, our high school art students have even more opportunities to explore beauty, develop their skills, and discover new talents through our growing fine arts offerings, including gouache painting and a new ceramics elective.

In gouache painting, students are learning to work with a unique water-based paint known for its rich, opaque color, combining some of the fluidity of watercolor with the bold coverage of acrylic. We are fortunate to have Miss Teska, a former Hillsdale Master Art Teacher, sharing her knowledge and skill as she guides students through this beautiful medium.

Our new ceramics elective is equally exciting, with Mrs. Scott, our newest art teacher and a professional ceramics artist, leading students in the craft. With the addition of our own kiln, students can now experience the entire process, from shaping a simple piece of clay to creating a finished work of art.

These new opportunities are about more than adding electives. They’re about giving our students new ways to wonder, create, persevere, and experience beauty.

And we can’t wait to see what they create.

Sports Summary Saturday

This past Saturday, 08/15, we had two individual cross country runners win the Eminence Eel's Invitational. They were Sydney Bush for the girls and Boaz Ewer for the boys. Schools participating were Seven Oaks, Eminence, Greencastle, and Indianapolis Lutheran. Our middle school girls team came in third place.

The middle school (7th grade) volleyball team went 1-1 at the Eastern Greene Round Robin Saturday as well, defeating Eastern Greene and losing to North Daviess.

Last Monday, our boys varsity soccer team defeated Mooresville Christian 2-1 at Karst.

Wednesday night, the same two runners, Sydney Bush and Boaz Ewer won their divisions at a threeway meet at Eastern Greene with them, Seven Oaks, and Shakamak. Elizabeth Wallace won the middle school girls division.

Way to go, Firehawks!
