CWU Bands was honored to welcome composer-in-residence Dr. James M. David to campus for a week of collaboration, learning, and music-making that left a lasting impact on our students, ensembles, and broader music community.

Throughout his residency, Dr. David worked closely with the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, culminating in performances of three of his compositions, including his Symphony No. 2, "The Road is Life." He also spent time with our graduate wind band conducting students, leading discussions on composition, commissioning, leadership, and the profession.

While the music itself was extraordinary, it was Dr. David's presence that made the week truly transformative. His generosity, humility, authenticity, and commitment to students created meaningful connections that extended far beyond the rehearsal hall.

Reflecting on the residency, Director of Bands Dr. T. André Feagin shared:

"Your (Dr. David) residency was everything I hoped it would be and more. The impact you had on our students, our ensembles, and our entire music community was profound. While your music served as the catalyst that brought us together, it was your kindness, humility, generosity, and authenticity that left the deepest impression."

For CWU Bands, the residency served as a powerful reminder of what can happen when great music and great people come together. Students experienced firsthand the creative process behind new music while witnessing an artist whose excellence is matched by his character.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. David for sharing his time, artistry, wisdom, humor, and friendship with our program. His visit was one of the defining experiences of our year, and its impact will continue to resonate throughout our ensembles for years to come. Thank you, Dr. David, for an unforgettable week at Central Washington University. 📸 Tyler White

Today, Central Washington University Bands was thrilled to host the Anacortes High School Band on campus for a day of connection and conversation.

During their visit, the students participated in a half-hour Q&A session with Dr. T. André Feagin, exploring topics that extended far beyond the rehearsal room. In addition to learning more about the band program and ensemble opportunities at CWU, students engaged in thoughtful discussion surrounding work ethic, discipline, practice habits, leadership, and preparing for life after high school.

Many thanks to Mr. Barry Janicula (Director of Bands) for allowing us the opportunity to connect with such an outstanding group of young musicians. We truly enjoyed our time together and look forward to seeing the Anacortes students again soon.

The CWU Wind Ensemble closed another intense and rewarding week of rehearsal with a continued commitment to communication, clarity, and musical intent.

Following rehearsal, the ensemble engaged in an interactive session with Dr. Feagin titled "Sound, Source, and Intent," a conversation centered on connecting self-expression to the deeper human experiences within our repertoire, and exploring how intention and communication shape meaningful artistry.

Powerful musical presentation begins long before the performance. It begins with understanding, purpose, and connection. Save the date: 6.4.26.
