The CWU Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction, M.Ed is a graduate program for teachers intending to advance their careers or assume positions of leadership within their schools. The program is intended to allow current teachers to focus on an area of emphasis in the P-12 classroom setting. A key component of the program is student choice, allowing you to design your own program. Program: The student will complete at least 48 credits as outlined in an approved “Course of Study” filed with the School of Graduate Studies and Research. All of the classes in the Educational Foundations and Curriculum Department are taught online. The development of a “Course of Study” most appropriate to the professional goals and purposes of each individual student must be completed and approved by a program advisor or
committee chair upon the completion of 18 credits. A key component of this Master Teacher program is student choice, allowing you to design your own program. You select 29 of the required 48 credits to meet your personal career goals. All Curriculum and Foundation courses are online (at least 19 credits). CONGRATULATIONS TO KATIE RHEINSCHMIDT!

Katie has earned her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at Central Washington, with a specialization in STEM Leadership.

Here is the part we love. Because of this degree, Katie is now teaching CWU College in the High School courses at Grandview High School, including Precalculus and Trigonometry. Her students can earn college math credit without leaving their own building, in a classroom with a teacher they already know.

She has been at Grandview for five years teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry, and coaching softball.

Katie’s STEM Leadership Portfolio reflects an educator who is passionate about creating meaningful STEM learning experiences for students. Key highlights from her portfolio include:

If you have been through the math department at Quincy High School in the last five years, chances are you have had Antonia. She teaches Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Bridges to College Math, and she has also served on teams focused on student wellness and achievement.

Eric has taught mathematics at Zillah High School for the past fourteen years. He teaches a wide range of high school mathematics courses and, after completing his master's degree, is now also teaching CWU College in the High School courses, including MATH 101, at Zillah High School.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NORA SEHNERT!

We are so excited to celebrate Nora's successful completion of her Central Washington University M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction!

Nora's M.Ed. project, Family Engagement in Native American Families, addresses a question schools often struggle with: when families don't show up the way a school expects, what is actually going on? Through her project, Nora demonstrated real growth by:

* Grounding her work in Tribal Critical Race Theory, which places family engagement inside the history of federal boarding schools, tribal sovereignty, and the mistrust that history left behind
* Structuring each chapter the same way, moving from what the research says, to how it connects to her own school context, to research-informed next steps, so the project ends in action rather than analysis
* Pushing back on deficit thinking regarding family engagement, telling a very different story rooted in kinship structures, transportation, work schedules, and generational distrust

Nora did all of this while serving as the only special educator at a tribally controlled school, carrying the responsibilities of special education teacher, coordinator, and many other roles. Her perseverance deserves as much celebration as the finished project.

CONGRATULATIONS TO LILI FIORITO!

We are so excited to celebrate Lili's successful Central Washington University M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction defense and her earning a Special Education teaching endorsement!

Lili reflected deeply on her growth throughout the program and specifically built her M.Ed. literature review around a question that matters in every inclusive elementary classroom: How does co-teaching affect the academic achievement of students with disabilities? In her defense, Lili demonstrated solid teaching knowledge and real growth as an educator by:

* Reviewing more than twenty studies on co-teaching, inclusion, and academic outcomes for students with disabilities
* Documenting her full search strategy, including databases, keywords, and her criteria for what to include and exclude, so her process could be followed and repeated
* Connecting the research back to practical texts on individualized and responsive instruction

Lili's work came down to this: co-teaching isn't automatically effective just because two teachers are in the room. What matters is how it gets implemented: shared planning, defined roles, real collaboration, and knowing your students. That is a genuinely useful takeaway for any school building a co-teaching model.

And here is our favorite part. Lili was hired as a special education teacher the day before she finished!

CONGRATULATIONS TO JILLIAN HAMPSON!

We are so excited to celebrate Jillian's successful completion of her Central Washington University M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction!

For her project, Teaching Bilingual Nonverbal Students in Their First and Second Language, Jillian looked at a question that comes up more and more in Washington classrooms: how do you support a student who is multilingual, autistic, and minimally speaking or nonspeaking, in both their home language and English? Through her project, Jillian demonstrated real growth as an educator by:

* Reviewing research across special education, autism instruction, and multilingual learner theory,
* Building a practical resource organized around two student scenarios in different placements, one in general education with resource support and one in a self-contained classroom with elective inclusion
* Connecting established frameworks like TEACCH, UDL, AAC, and translanguaging to specific classroom decisions

What stood out about Jillian's work was how much she cared about whether a teacher could actually use it. She kept the focus on practical steps, and she was upfront about what her project did and didn't establish.

CONGRATULATIONS TO LEAH ALLEN!

We are so excited to celebrate Leah's successful completion of her Central Washington University M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction!

Leah built her master's portfolio around social-emotional learning, and she carried it all the way through from research to practice. Across her portfolio, Leah demonstrated real depth as an educator by:

* Completing a literature review on the impact of social-emotional learning, examining the CASEL framework, the role of teacher-student relationships, and what it takes to implement SEL with fidelity
* Connecting her coursework in culturally responsive classroom management to the daily work of building trust with students
* Bringing SEL directly into her classroom through morning meetings, structured check-ins, and art instruction that helps students center and reset
* Writing a Professional Goals statement that tied her SEL focus to her leadership work on her school's equity team

Leah is a second-grade teacher in the Issaquah School District, and what came through in every piece of her portfolio was how reflective she is. She wrote honestly about her own practice, kept asking what her students actually needed, and never lost sight of their well-being. That kind of care and dedication is exactly what this program is about.

Congratulations to E'lexis Hollis on successfully completing her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction defense at Central Washington University!

E'lexis's master's project tackled something that matters every day in real classrooms: the gap between what the law requires for inclusive education and how prepared teachers are to deliver it.

She developed a practical toolkit for general education teachers working with students with disabilities in preschool through 3rd grade, grounding it in frameworks such as UDL, MTSS, and PBIS, and bringing it to life through three detailed student profiles covering autism spectrum disorder, AAC communication, and visual impairment.

The work reflects exactly the kind of practitioner-focused scholarship this program is designed to produce. We're proud of E'lexis and excited to see the impact this work will have. Congratulations!
