In the best sense of the word, The Human Library is a library of people who have experienced prejudice. Instead of paper books, actual people are on loan for conversations. The Human Library creates a safe space for conversation where topics subject to taboo, marginalization, or stigmatization can be openly addressed without condemnation. The people acting as Books have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias, or discrimination based on aspects of their person, heritage, or life experiences. At The Human Library, we invite all questions as our Books engage in sharing their personal experiences with the readers.

The Ellensburg Human Library is a joint collaboration between the CWU EthicsLab, City of Ellensburg, Ellensburg Public Library and Hal Holmes Community Center.

Droughts? Wildfires? Threatened salmon runs? Climate change feels less abstract and more like an everyday reality. How is our community preparing for climate change so that future generations will be able to enjoy an enriching life in Central Washington?

Join us on Tues, Feb 20th at 5:30PM (Dean Hall Lobby) to hear from three community leaders about how the community is preparing for climate change: Heidi Behrends-Cerniwey (City Manager, City of Ellensburg), Kevin Haydon (Yakima Basin Integrated Plan Project Manager and Environmental Planner, Department of Ecology), and Rose Shriner-Beaton (Kittitas County, Department of Natural Resources). This event is free and open to the public.

The 'Living with Climate Change' series is sponsored by Philosophy and Comparative Religion, Environmental Studies, English, Museum of Culture and the Environment, CWU Sustainability Group, CWU Ethicslab, and Kittitas Environmental Education Network (KEEN).

Did you know that not all libraries have books? Returning to Ellensburg this Fall, the Human Library offers the opportunity for real people (Books) to share their experiences and stories as they engage with the community (Readers) in conversation.

If you defy a stereotype and are motivated to help challenge stigma through dialogue and personal conversations, then maybe the Human Library can publish you to our local readers in Ellensburg.

The Human Library is a nonprofit organization that hosts conversations designed to challenge stigma and stereotypes. These events create “a safe space for dialogue where topics are discussed openly” and “where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.” Human Library events have been organized in 85 countries worldwide since 2000.

If you're interested in becoming a Book for the Human Library, please fill out our application (https://tinyurl.com/mrxu69mp). Once submitted, you will be contacted by one of our local Human Library organizers for further steps. All are welcome to apply.

The EthicsLab seeks to promote critical thinking and engaged dialog on ethical and social issues

Do you want to make the world a better place? Can you think of local community needs or problems where you could make a difference?

In partnership with the City of Ellensburg, WA Government, the CWU EthicsLab is now accepting applications for the first annual Ellensburg Engaged Ethics Competition. In this competition, local high school and college students design and implement a project that does as much good as possible for the Ellensburg community. Projects will focus on community needs in areas like health, environment, or supporting social networks or community resiliency. Eligible teams may apply and receive support for up to $400 towards project expenses (subject to university and state requirements). Projects will be supervised by the CWU EthicsLab, publicly presented in late Fall 2023, and judged by community leaders.

Prompt: Design and implement a project that does as much good as possible for the Ellensburg community.

Instructions:

1. Form a team: Teams will consist of 4-5 local students (high school and/or university).
2. Develop your idea: Projects should focus on addressing a local need in an area like health, environment, or supporting social networks or community resiliency.
3. Submit your team application: Submit an application that outlines your project idea and plan. CWU EthicsLab will reach out to your group for next steps.
