Where are these children supposed to walk?
I took this video Thursday at 6:49 am and I want everyone to pay close attention to what they’re seeing.
See that sidewalk?
Every winter, it disappears beneath the snowbanks. Once that happens, there are no sidewalks or usable shoulders on either side of this road.
Children are left walking in the road, alongside moving traffic, just to reach their centralized bus stops.
And some of these stops are located right in the road, leaving children standing near passing vehicles while they wait for the bus. There is no protection from traffic, no shelter from the elements, and nowhere safe for these children to stand when snowbanks take over the sides of the road.
Now imagine these same conditions at 6:30 am in the morning, before daylight, with snowbanks, snowplows, ice, freezing temperatures, and vehicles traveling in both directions.
But traffic isn’t the only concern.
Every time we require children to walk these roads and wait at centralized stops, we’re also leaving them vulnerable to being approached, followed, or potentially abducted by someone intending to harm them.
That’s a safety concern that cannot simply be ignored.
Here’s what makes this even more frustrating.
The school bus already travels down this very road, passing the homes of children who could be picked up directly at their doors, just as they were before these changes were made.
So what exactly is being accomplished by making children walk in the road to reach a bus stop when the bus is already passing their homes?
This is Lyon Mountain.
These are the actual conditions children are expected to navigate just to get to school.
And winter hasn’t even arrived yet.
But it will be here soon!
