The Highland School

The Highland School THE HIGHLAND SCHOOL is a democratic, self-directed learning school founded in 1981. We are a democratic school.

Our daily social interactions provide the opportunity for individuals to learn. Children learn through experience - through following their interests, coming to terms with boundaries, and understanding the consequences of their actions. School Members are free to learn as they wish, when they are ready, to the extent that they are interested, with the full understanding that they make their own learning decisions. Through this process, individuals develop personal responsibility.

We traveled to Norfolk and visited the Nauticus Museum on Wednesday. While we were there, we rode a boat out to see Navy ships and loading docks nearby. A big freighter with many shipping containers passed very close our port side!

We jumped into spring with our 2026 Highland School trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. Each day we enjoyed different places and activities. Monday, Thursday, and Friday we rode rides and sampled international foods at Busch Gardens. On Tuesday we visited Colonial Williamsburg and on Wednesday we travelled to Norfolk to explore the Nauticus Museum. Lots of fun!

Our Christmas lunch and party gave us a chance to escape the snow and ice for a day this week. Highlights included Chinese food, many games of Flip 7, opening gifts, working on our Christmas puzzle, and putting together the Lego Christmas Train. We enjoyed spending time together!
