Calling Our Community!

We’re looking for community members, businesses, organizations, and professionals who would be willing to host an Upward Bound student for a job shadowing experience this November!

As part of their November Challenge Session, our high school seniors will have the opportunity to step into a professional setting, learn more about a career they’re interested in, and experience what a typical day in that field can look like.

We are looking for volunteers throughout Randolph, Barbour, Tucker, Pendleton, and Pocahontas Counties who would be willing to welcome a student for a job shadowing experience.

Whether you work in healthcare, education, business, law, skilled trades, agriculture, communications, technology, public service, or another field, we’d love to hear from you! Students have a wide variety of interests, and we want to help connect them with professionals who can give them a firsthand look at the world of work.

If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting a student, please reach out to us! We would be happy to provide more information about the experience and what would be expected of our community volunteers.

Help us give our students the opportunity to see their future in action! ❤️

As another Upward Bound Bridge Summer comes to a close, it's hard to believe how quickly the weeks have flown by.

What began as a group of students arriving with excitement, nerves, and plenty of questions has become a community of friends, leaders, and future college students. Watching each of you grow in confidence, independence, and resilience has been one of the greatest rewards of this summer.

Together we shared countless memories, from fierce pickleball matches and bowling frames to movie nights, swimming, campus adventures, and our now legendary scavenger duck hunt. Every activity was about more than just having fun; it was an opportunity to build friendships, solve problems, step outside comfort zones, and create memories that will last long after this summer ends.

Most importantly, we watched you challenge yourselves academically, navigate college life, support one another, and prove that you belong here. Each of you leaves this program stronger than when you arrived.

To our Bridge students: We are incredibly proud of everything you accomplished. Your hard work, determination, kindness, and willingness to embrace new experiences made this one of the most successful Bridge summers we've ever had. The future is bright because of young people like you.

While it's always bittersweet to say goodbye, this isn't the end, it's the beginning of your next chapter. Continue to dream big, work hard, ask questions, and never doubt what you're capable of achieving.

Thank you for an unforgettable summer. We can't wait to see where your journey takes you next.

Congratulations, Bridge Class of 2026. Your Upward Bound family will always be cheering you on.

On Friday, July 10, our summer program came to an end. We celebrated our students’ achievements and successes during our awards ceremony. Students received awards for being outstanding in their classes, being engaged, asking questions, trying their hardest, and overall, being good students. We are so proud of each and every one of our students who participated in the program this summer. We would also like to thank our teachers for helping our students grow and succeed: Dave Armentrout (Financial Literacy); Brian Moudry (Physics); Jerod Caligiuri (Math); Sara Gerot (English/Comp & Black Bear Creek); Melissa Cartlidge (Spanish); Emma Proudfoot and Alexia Fredell (Learning Lab); Melissa Cartlidge & Sarah DiBacco (Voyage of Growth); Tessa Randolph & Wyndsor Aumann (College 101). This program would not be possible without our students, so thank you to all of our students for making this summer possible. To our staff, thank you for helping our students and making this program succeed. We appreciate everyone so much! You are the reason

On Wednesday, July 1, we traveled to the French Creek Wildlife Center to see WV Wildlife. It was a great (but hot! 🥵) day. We had a picnic lunch at the pavilion at the Wildlife Center. When we came back, we had a cookout dinner, complete with a s’mores bar of course! Then, students tie dyed and played water games to keep cool for the rest of the evening! It was a great day. Thanks to everyone who helped for making this day possible for our students!

On Sunday, June 28, we took our summer academy students to Shepherd University, where they participated in the UB Olympics on Monday, June 29! Shepherd’s program and Marshall University’s program also represented. It was a great (but very hot 🥵) day. We had tons of fun and made lots of memories. Thank you to Shepherd University for hosting D&E Upward Bound!

What a busy week last week was! We took a 2 day trip to Beckley, WV for our Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) trip. We stayed at Glade Springs Resort and had a great stay. Breakfast was catered each day by Grandview Diner in Beaver, WV in (everything was delicious! Thank you!) On Wednesday, we had a tour of WVU Tech and had former D&E UB advisor Chelsey Toms join us for a welcome to the campus. Students got to talk about future careers and opportunities WVU Tech has to offer. Then, we did a campus tour and had lunch in their dining hall! After lunch, we made our way over to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine for a tour underground of the mine, some of the history, and some good stories! We also toured a house and church! Later that evening, we broke into groups to do activities such as swimming, escape rooms, laser tag, and bowling! On Thursday, we made the trip back to Elkins and made some stops along the way at the Tamarack Shopping Center of WV local made goods! Then, we had lunch at the New River Gorge catered by Panera Bread in Beckley (thank you!) and got to view the gorge and bridge from different overlooks. When we got back to D&E, we had an etiquette dinner hosted by the college and Chef Mel - thank you so much for teaching our students about meal etiquette!

A busy, busy week, but the students had the best time! Thank you to all that helped make this trip possible!
