We love Safe Families!! They are making such an impact in our communities!
When a young mother delivered her baby while incarcerated last August, the question wasn't just who would care for her son. It was whether they'd still be connected when she came home.
Safe Families for Children - Racine and Kenosha Metro answered both.
Volunteers hosted the baby for eight months, bringing him in for weekly visits so mother and son never lost their bond. They picked up breastmilk so she could continue to nurse. They built a friendship with her through those visits - not as case workers, but as neighbors who showed up and kept showing up.
When she was released in April, she didn't have to wait months to be reunited with her child. She picked up her son immediately - and walked into a community that was already there. People who are helping her find work, encouraging her sobriety, and walking beside her as she builds the life she's determined to give her son.
Without Safe Families, this baby would have entered foster care, and reunification could have taken years. Instead, a circle of volunteers kept a family together.
